Help me understand the Locked Screen function

I know that I can lock the screen of my Edge 830 by pushing the power button while riding.  I usually lock the screen when riding in the rain. Seems like a good idea, but the screen then isn't truly locked -- I can still change the views by swiping.  Whenever I try to wipe the raindrops off the screen with my palm, it changes the view or brings up the pull-down menu. What is the point of this?  I don't know if this is a feature or a bug.

When I lock the screen, I want to be locked, so whatever touches the screen (my hand included) doesn't affect it.

  • It is a feature and not a bug.

Swiping is still possible but changing data fields in error by rain is not anymore.

You should not swipe the raindrops off the screen.

  • Well it's tougher to read when covered in raindrops...

I usually wipe the screen clear, then have to swipe back to whatever screen view I was on.

  • I use this functionality even is no rain

    • if you lock your garmin, you can light your display with one tap, this is very useful for me
    • you can scroll pages , but you cannot save or cancel ride by mistake
    • i think here you can play with touch sensivity
    • if it heavy rain it does not *** up the menus over and over again
  • Why do you lock the screen when there is no rain?  You're still using the screen to change pages.  Why not just leave it unlocked?  What does locking it do for you?

  • I just explained, i can light the display without having other interference with just one tap

  • Do you not use Auto Brightness?  I never touch my screen to turn on the light.  The Auto brightness controls the light automatically.

  • If you are using autobrigness, it will automaticaly light your display if ouside is dark?

Because i dont remeber that is the case on my garmin

  • It adjusts the screen brightness based on the ambient light conditions.  So it's never completely off, but dims the screen when ambient light is low and brightens it up in bright light.  The idea is to save battery by not using it to light up the screen when not needed.

  • Same situation holds to my Edge 830. Thanks for this topic confirming it'n not a bug. However the raindrops still make the pages swipe. During navigation however sometimes the touch is used during the ride.

Garmin support is involved for my issue however only requesting each time a device reinstall losing all my settings and connect app reinstall.

  • My experience is that auto brightness doesn't protect from going screen to no backlight after few seconds.

Screen has to be touched to enable backlight. Activated backlight intensity is based on ambient light sensor.

If no auto mode is enabled then after touching screen backlight intensity is based on value set on slider.

I know no way to keep backlight (at least minimal) forever.
