Edge 830 locked up on first ride with version 6.00

On my first ride after downloading the v6.00 update, my Edge locked up.  It happened just as I completed a climb, and the Climbpro sceen changed to the altitude screen.  The screen and buttons where completely unresponsive.  It looked like this:

As I was standing on the side of the road trying to figure out what happened, a car came up behind me.  I have a Varia radar taillight, and the Edge actually beeped as the car approached.  Then the screen looked like this:

The screen was then locked like that.  All buttons and screen still unresponsive.  Eventually I held the power button down for a while, and then this happened:

Video of locked Edge

The video shows the screen locked on the power button symbol.  At the same time, it was making a constant tone, which I tried to capture with the video but the cars driving by kind of drown it out.  I held the power button down again, and after it a while it finally rebooted.

PLEASE GARMIN!  I have a 100-mile backcountry mountain bike race in two weeks, and I desperately need a reliable device!  The LAST thing I want to have to deal with is lock-ups during a race.

  • I was riding today and had the same issue twice.  Sw version 6.0.  Garmin locked up, had to hold the power button forever to get it to reboot.  It seemed to reconnect to everything and continue to function.  At the time I was using the turn by turn guidance for a route that I had downloaded from Strava to the device.  When I got home it cut a significant part of my 101 mile ride's route off the map, and lost the data for that segment.  The overall distance seemed correct, but no speed, heart rate, etc.  Previously was using the Wahoo App on my iPhone with Wahoo Cadence, Speed and Heart Rate sensors.  Never had a problem, and my friend says he has a Wahoo computer for three years and has had zero problems.  I also raced a crit a couple of weeks ago and it lost connection to my sensors in the middle of the race.  No data.  It really sucks to spend so much $$$ on a device and be worried that it will crash or lose connection at times when you can't just pull over and troubleshoot a device that really shouldn't be having these problems in the first place. I didn't purchase it that long ago and I think I may just take it back to the bike shop and see if they can give me a Wahoo instead.

I hope you are able to get some help to get your confidence back in the device before your race.

  • I did the race without any lock-ups thankfully.  Although the navigation was pretty useless -- I had loaded the RideWithGPS route provided by the race director, and much of the time my Edge was telling me to either make a U-turn or it was stuck on "0 ft" for the next turn.  So I basically either followed my fellow competitors (when they were in sight) or watched for the arrows on the course for where to make turns.

I've been watching the Tour de France and it looks like a lot of riders are using Garmin devices (and I've seen a few guys swiping screens during the race).  I wonder what the pros do when they experience lock-ups and other technical glitches.
