Garmin Express Problems

Both my laptop and main computer will not talk to the 830 using the supplied Garmin USB lead. I have had problems of this type before with my 810. I had rather hoped that Garmin would have sorted this dodgy software out before now. It seems a bit hit and miss to me whether you are going to get the Edge to talk to the dodgy program. With Bluetooth and wi fi both featuring 0n teh Edge 830 we should now be able to send routes to it via the ether instead of relying on access to a computer that has a USB that may or may not work the first, second or third time [with or without the lap button depressed for 30 secs, restarting etc] none of which have worked for me. Its a a thumbs down from me and wondering whether I should have bought aother product.

    Just try a different USB cable.  When you find one that works keep using it.

    I can’t comment on the USB issue as mine worked fine out of the box.  But as far as transferring routes via WIFI or BT,  look at the ConnectIQ add-on apps.  I use the one with RideWithGPS so I can pin a ride on their site and download it to my Garmin from anywhere.  This may help.  There are other ConnectIQ apps for Strava, etc.

    The way mine works is I have it powered off, connect it to the computer (PC) with the usb cable, the unit powers up like it's operational, than after a minute or so switches to mass storage mode and connects to the computer.  Once connected, I can see it as a drive on my computer and Garmin Express will see it.  What happens when you connect yours to your computer?

    Hi Thanks for that. I have never heard of ConnectIQ. Is it easy to understand and does this mean you download from RideWithGPS direct using WiFi? Could you point me to any help page that would walk me through this?

    I've tried all of the above and it still does not appear. The USB is as supplied by Garmin so I fail to see how a different one would change things. Its not a standard mini-USB as previously but it seems the 830 now has a uniquely formed micro plug at the Garmin end.

    The USB socket on the Edge 830 is a standard one.  It takes a standard plug.  I don't use the Garmin supplied cable with my 830, I use a cable that I already had hanging around as it was already to hand.

    Sometimes cables are bad and they are easy and cheap to swap which is why people say try different cables and sockets if you are having trouble with a USB device

    I think it’s easy enough to understand.  My bike club uses RideWithGPS to host our rides but I also use it for creating my personal rides.  If you install the ConnectIQ app for it, then you just need to pin your ride in RWG.  On the 830 open the RWG app and you can select pinned rides.  Or recent etc.  But I find using the pinned rides the easiest.  

    But there are several ConnectIQ apps for different route builders.  Strava etc.

    The USB port on my 830 works perfectly.

    You can create a course on the Garmin Connect website and transfer that course to your 830 using the Garmin Connect Mobile app. 

    I have exported several routes from the RWGPS website and imported those routes to courses on the Garmin Connect website and then transferred those courses to my 830 using GCM over BT. That allowed me to share the courses with other people who do not use RWGPS.
