Garmin 830 Edge not giving correct distances but shows correct route on map.

  1. I’m having an issue with my new garmin 830. It’s recording the route but giving the complete wrong distance. I have power, cadence and speed sensor. Also have a heart rate and garmin radar connected.The power and cadence seam right. I used to use my fenix 5 which was spot on. I don’t wear that while I use the 830. Any advice please
  • Probably need to calibrate the speed sensor.  It will auto-calibrate when first paired.  That's best done over a relatively straight course of about a km.   Manual calibration is usually better.  Do a roll-out measurement of your wheel circumference, wake up the sensor and have the 830 actively connected to it, go into the the menu for the sensors, choose manual calibration and input the circumference measurement.

  • Thank will give that a go. My wheel is 100mm smaller than what was in there. Not sure if that much will do it as I’m 7miles out on a 23mile ride. Cheers

  • I find it hard to believe that if it can plot the course it can’t workout the miles. Never had this issue with my fenix 5 watch.

  • The distance measured and shown on the unit is based fully on the speed sensor if one is paired and available, so any odd distance measures seen on the unit directly would be due to either wrong wheel size set or speed sensor not working correctly. This is also the distance that will show afterwards in Garmin Connect. However if you take the GPS recorded route and import into e.g. Garmin BaseCamp or an online cycle routing / tracking program (e.g. AllTrails or RideWithGPS), they will calculate a new distance based on the GPS tracking. You can use this to compare - so if the GPS tracking shows as VERY correct even when zooming in much (not a guarantee, there's multiple discussions ongoing about GPS accuracy with the Sony chipsets that Garmin uses) you can then use that to work out the precise wheel size. And conversely, if you're very sure you already have a highly precise wheel size, you can use it to work out the error level of your GPS tracking.

  • ^^^ yeah.  GPS position has wander and recording has granularity.  This is true for all devices.  At low speeds of bicycles and over tortuous courses, (especially on mtbs), this can lead to errors in instantaneous speed (and erratic operation of auto pause) and the total distance reported being less than actual.  Wheel sensors are used to overcome these issues, but must be properly calibrated.

  • Same issue here, and the speed sensor cant be the problem as I did not use it. The track on the map was exactly the same as on my fenix 3, but the calculated distance completely wrong. Fenix 17km (correct as Strava distance correction shows this as correct vs Edge 830 11 km. Garmin Development team, can you please fix this error? It came after the last software update.
