Start activity 830

Hi

Just bought an 830 and either it’s faulty or I’m an idiot .. hoping it’s the latter because I don’t want to be sending it back...

Been for my first ride, it picks up the wheel sensor and registers a speed, and “beeps” periodically and puts a “play” button on screen. Now my intuition says I should just need to press that blue button somewhere on the screen and the timer should start happily .. However mine does not, and I don’t see any other way to do it?

is it faulty or am I ?

/confused rider.

  • The start button is on the bottom right. It might be an idea to take a look through the instructions. You can download them directly in Garmin Express Or here

    https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/edge830/EN-US/Edge_830_OM_EN-US.pdf

  • It's a physical button on the rear edge of the Edge.   It's on the right rear edge and a Lap button is on the left rear edge.  "When all else fails, RTFM."

Rolling eyes  Thanks both. Believe it or not I did RTFM but clearly walked past page one straight to fitting and beyond ... please I’m the idiot here.

  • I went on my first ride today and had the same exact issue. I kept pressing the play image on the screen and nothing worked. Came home and read AGAIN the manual and still did not get it at first as the manual DOES NOT indicate the play button displayed on the screen is physical. Probably should have figured this out as I know where the button was but since it appeared on the screen I thought that meant just press it to start the timer and ride. My Edge 800 that I loved and used for over 10 years had a physical button as well but when the message came on the screen if you want to start the timer all you had to do was press yes on the screen. Oh well so much for tech advancement.

  • I know about the start/stop button but can’t remember ever pressing it to start.  It starts tracking when I start moving.

Have you checked the auto pause etc settings?  I have heard of people having this problem when setting it to start on move which uses the speed sensor.  I use the min speed instead.

  • >>> I know about the start/stop button but can’t remember ever pressing it to start.  <<<

Under settings you can change the start behavior between manual, prompted, and automatic.  In Manual, you need to press the button to start.  In prompted, it will beep and display a message at the speed threshold you set to remind you to press the button.  In Automatic, it will start when you reach the speed threshold you set.

  • Timer start mode has Manual / Prompted and Auto ( as looigi stated )  Mine is prompted for 6.00 mph.  When I hit 6 it displays a box like the Navigate to Start Location box - it has a X for don't start and a check mark to start the timer - press the check mark and the timer starts.  This is under the activity profile.
