Naming your 830

Before I had to reset my  830 due to issues with firmware 5.50, I had it named as "Nicks Edge 830" and when I would use Garmin Connect on my iPhone, it would show up with that name. After I reset it, the device just says generic "Edge 830". I did set up the friendly name for the Bluetooth connection as "Nicks Edge 830" and that shows up fine on the iphone BT connection page, but that does not seem to be the same as naming it for the Connect app.

I can't for the life of me remember how to change the name of the Edge 830 itself. What am I missing?  Did something change in 5.50 and after I reset it, that option for naming the device no longer works?  Or should the BT "friendly name" also populate the Garmin Connect page?

Thanks,

Nick

  • IDK.  In Garmin connect, you can click on the watch like icon at the top right which is Devices and Sync Status.  Click on the specific device settings and on the resultant screen you can click on the pencil to the right of the device name at the top of the page.  IDK if this does what you want, though.

  • Try looking in Garmin Connect (web) for the device and change it's name there.

OK, Thanks. I just did the web-based Garmin Connect and successfully updated the name in my account using that process and went ahead and synced things. It took a few syncs and eventually updated it on the mobile Connect app. I also synced it to the actual 830 device. It does seem that the new name only shows up in the mobile- or web-based Connect app, and not anywhere on the actual device. Correct?

  • Correct. That name change is for GC and GCM.

  • True, BUT you can add a message that displays at boot-up -- see https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2013/08/display-number-garmin.html

  • Correct. That name change is for GC and GCM.

Interestingly I could manage somehow that after I changed the name of my 530, it changed not just the names of the device in GC web and GCM IOS, but also in the Bluetooth menu. Both BL and BLE names of 530.

On the other hand today I could not do the same with my Fenix 6X.

Unfortunately I do not remember the sequence of how exactly I changed the friendly name of 530, in GE or in GC web. Whether I had disconnected my 530 from my Iphone before the name change etc, but today I tried lots of sequences in vain.

I wonder whether there is a difference between Edges and Fenixes in this field.

But anyway I bet that the friendly name of 830 may be updated in BT menu of the phone, too.
