Unproductive after 3 hrs with a +5 Performance value ??

Does anyone know how this works?  I find it hard to believe on my latest ride that my Garmin thinks I’m unproductive, when I spent most (if not all) of the 3hrs+ at +5.  My guess is my initial -6 during my warm up, that lasted 30s, is the culprit.  I find the performance indicator highly frustrating some days, as it makes no sense.  Most days it gives me a -ve during warmup, which I think is due to it not liking rolling hills where my power and HR are fluctuating as I leave town to get into the country roads.  Anyhow I try not to pay attention to it and just enjoy my ride, but I think the algorithms could use some tuning.

PS - I felt amazing in this ride, especially given the heat and effort outputted.  So regardless of what Garmin says, my fitness is trending upwards Joy

  • If garmin display Training Status as unproductive, probably it has some explanation for it. I have this if i have spent too much time in HR zone 4:
"It looks like your training load is too focused on high intensity activities. Consider mixing in more low aerobic activities to be more productive."

Check your training load, if you train too often, consider some rest day or mix workouts with some endurance rides in zone 2/3. Structured training is the key :)
A lot to read about this on the firstbeat webpage

  • LOL.  “Your well structured training load is at the right level, but your fitness is decking”.  No it’s not Joy.  +5 performance for over 3hrs and my V02max has been at 65 for several days / rides.

  • FWIW, I have never been able to do a ride that produced *any* "low aerobic" value -- I think you must have to walk your bike or something.  So I pretty much ignore most of the "fitness" info that the Edge reports; I just use it to record the ride, and occasionally navigate.  Leave it to a proper fitness system to give you analysis -- after all, what do you expect from a device from a GPS company that can't even do GPS properly a lot of the time?

  • It is easy to get activities with a low aerobic score provided you have your HR zones set appropriately.  If they are too high then it won't register a lower heart rate in the low aerobic area as it will think the HR is below that area.  If the zones are too low it will think a lower HR is above the low aerobic range.

  • Well, I used the default HR zones [50-60%, 60-70%, etc) and set my max HR.  So if those defaults are bogus then I guess the results are bogus.  But on a recent long ride the Garmin Connect data shows I was in Z1 and Z2 for 29% of the ride, yet the Training Status graph has a solid orange bar (100% High Aerobic) for that ride -- it shows no "low aerobic" (or anaerobic, for that matter) on the graph.

This device/mobile/web software is all totally bogus.  They can't even get a forum platform that shows proper threading.

  • Look at how your training zones are set up, if it’s standard Garmin, change ASAP. Also be sure that your max heart rate is right, not some kind of 220- your grandmothers age or some funny stuff. Do a proper test.

  • There are many different ways of calculating HR zones.  They give different results.  Find one that works for you.  The default Garmin ones didn't work for me.  I use the British Cycling method:  calculate your LTHR and use their calculator to create the zones from that number.

  • Set it up correctly and it will give you the correct training effect. But don't blame the tool if you don't use it properly.

I can get exactly the session out of it that I want because I set it up correctly. And yes, I use Garmin Connect and also have a subscription to trainingpeaks.
