Edge 830/Smart Trainers Proper Pairing with Current FW

so i see that in fw 5.50 (and possibly before) that you can pair the edge with the new indoor smart trainers (tacx neo, wahoo kickr bike, stages bike etc) as an indoor bike. using this method, the edge sees the bike and i'm able to get power data, but i don't see anything else. i came across this article dated 3/31 that explains that to get all cycling dynamic data you need to also pair it as a power meter and a speed/cadence sensor.

To view data such as power phase and left/right balance, you’ll need to pair the NEO 2T to the Edge via the sensors menu as a “Power Meter” and “Spd/Cad” sensor. If paired as an indoor trainer, the Garmin Edge 530 will only display power data.

so the question is, what is the definitive way to pair the current edge models with current fw with the new smart trainers? must i pair it as 3 different things (indoor bike, power meter, speed/cadence sensor) in order to see all available data? if so, what exactly was the upgrade in 5.50 for? i want to be able to see and record all possible cycling data from my indoor workouts

  • Don’t know the tacx neo, but you should be able to get power balance, power left/right from the Stages. Think the kickrbike will give you power, and no balace. I use wahoo kickr with Zwift, have paired it as a contolable trainer, and use my Favero Assioma dual powerpedals with the Edge 830 for power/cadence.

  • If you pair the Assioma's as a power meter, *and* also Kickr with Edge 830 as an "Indoor trainer" (separate menu under "Training"), you can also configure gear ratio and wheel size to get more accurate speed and distance measurements. In "indoor trainer" mode, Garmin will prioritize the Assiomas for power, but will get speed and distance numbers from the Kickr. The sad thing is - Garmin will also control the Kickr. I am trying to figure how to let Trainer Road control the Kickr without giving up the speed and distance configuration. As of now, I don't know.

  • They way I look at it, speed and distance on a trainer is zero.  It actually is zero, fwiw.  What matters is effort level (or power) and duration.  Apps like Zwift will show speed and distance but that's based on power, not how fast your rear wheel happens to be rotating (though Zwift will use that to estimate power on dumb trainers, but not use it directly for speed or distance in the app, which is still based on power.)  So, record what matters on the 830, power, HR (if using it), and time.  If the app you're using happens to fabricate some virtual speed and distance, use that app for that.
