Suunto 9 use as HR sensor for Edge 830

Good morning everybody,

I just bought my new Edge 830 and very happy about this after 2 rides.

I just have 2 questions :

  • Is it possible to use my sportwatch Suunto 9 as HR sensor during activities?
  • I notice also that the actives calories estimated are too high ( my weight, size are correctly recorded in garmin connect) . Do you know this issue? The difference is 50 % higher ( calculated by strava and my suunto 9 ).

Thank you very much for your feedback,

Regards

  • Hi Jmhannard,

don't think it works that way, you probably need to get a HR-Cheststrap. I would recommend looking into the Garmin HRM-Dual, Polar H10 or something like that. (Suunto 9 doesn't even have ANT+ as far as I know and I tried to broadcast HR from a friends Suunto 9 already, there's no way as far as I can tell)

The reason you have no HR would also be the reason why your active calories estimate are so much off, these calculations need your heartrate to be accurate.

    Hello,

    Thanks for your answer,

I understand well but is there some parameters in garmin connect interface web as HR data ( value ) to change to get better value?

What are the solution to have HR without HR Chestrap ? To buy a garmin watch?

    Regards

  • If you don't want to get a cheststrap, you can consider getting something like the Polar OH1 armband.

I don't see why you wouldn't get the cheststrap though, it's the most accurate solution and would cost you somewhere between $50 and $100.

Or you simply track with your watch and the edge, but I don't see why you need the Edge data anyways if you always wear the Suunto 9. (other than having the data in front of you)

    Thanks,

I just want to have all the good information regarding the calories burns.

Strava didn't mix the data from watch and edge for the same activities...

  • Well as far as Strava is concerned, those are two different activites, as they have unique IDs.

As far as I can tell a lot of people track with both the watch and the Edge and simply discard the Edge activity in the end.
