Firmware 5.50 creating errors on Edge 830

I just installed Firmware 5.50 on my Edge 830 yesterday.

First ride out after loading and calculating a pre-existing route which I have ridden previously with no errors, I get a "calculation error" within the first few minutes of the ride which freezes up the function. I stop the ride/route and restart it, I ride ~ 12 miles of the route and stop the ride. I set it up to go back to beginning of the ride along the same route. It recalculates and start the ride. Approximately 1/2 way back, the directions on the ride is having me turn the wrong way at intersections. Then ~ 1 mile later it says again something like "calculation error".

This firmware update has apparently broken my Edge 830. I have never had these "calculation errors" during a ride until this firmware 5.50 update. Please fix this and stop breaking things with updates. :-)

Thanks,

Nick.

  • Since updating my 830 to 5.50 I get a ‘Route Calculation Error’ message on every ride, even though I am not riding s route.

I guess I am not the only one with this issue. Hopefully Garmin will at least acknowledge there is an issue and help us out; my 830 is essentially unusable. Since late last summer, it worked flawlessly until now when I updated the firmware as instructed. There is also no way that I know of to try to reload the firmware in case it was a flawed update. Doesn't Garmin test out their updates first?

Is Garmin actually paying attention to these forums? There definitely seems to be issues with this firmware 5.50. Until I updated to this, my Edge 830 worked fine. Now it has become unuseable with "Route Calculation Error" and wrong turn directions. I reset it and will try again tomorrow, but if it fails again, I am going to return it to REI and look for something else. I really wanted to like this 830, but I am now understanding why people complain about Garmin firmware/software issues. My Wahoo Bolt may be very simple but it just works; I would feel better if Garmin would actually acknowledge the issues with 5.50. I really don't want to get a Wahoo Roam because the hardware is not as nice as the Garmin, but hardware is useless if bad firmware keeps me from using the 830.

But if it fails again, I am going to return it to REI and look for something else. I really wanted to like this 830 (upgraded from the 520), but I am now understanding why people complain about Garmin firmware/software issues. I get these all the time, real frustrating to plan your ride out, get to trail head and can't follow the route! That is why I have a GPS. I never had issues with my 800.. this might be my last Garmin, their software sux
