Absent/No navigation shown

I've had my unit about 4 weeks now and so far I've had quite a few navigation issues, mostly related to absence of a turn notification.

For example my route last week passed along a secondary road but then came off to the left on a bend onto a tertiary road.... No navigation indication was received so I continued on the more dominant named road that I was only to be told to do a u turn 40 metres later.

Similarly today, but even worse, I came to a t junction and again no turn notification, so I guess... Incorrectly and again had to carry out a u turn.

At another point last week I was given a totally irrelevant navigation indicator to not turn down a secondary road at 90 degrees to my path.... Which then caused no notification at a cross roads (where I was expected to go straight across a more significant road) but it was still showing the irrelevant indicator from 70 yards previously.

I must admit I'm very disappointed in the navigation routing so far.... Half my Strava routes look like I've taken up knitting...

Please advise on these issues and when they are likely to be resolved

  • If you ride with the map visible, you also see the loaded Course as a purple / magenta line. In case you'd expect a navigation indication and it is not shown, then the only thing you have to do is to look at the screen and you know where to go. What's difficult on that? And if you get yourself accustomed to that way of riding your disappointments will turn to enjoying your ride. Indeed, sometimes the Turn-by-Turn indications are not accurate, but my experience is that in many cases the map itself is the cause and not the navigation device. Another advice is to switch automatic recalculation OFF.

Also you could consider to ride the Course without any navigation indications at all. There will be some accomodation time, but works very well in practice - for me at least using my race bicycle or MTB. The only thing is to have the map visible all the time, so no timeout.

  • Thanks for the response, not sure it really answers the question though. Remaining in routing mode at all times or having to flick between screens when navigation should already have appeared are low value options for a device that costs this price

The other suggestion, ride course without navigation options at all seems like an odd option, I'm not really sure this is a great workaround.

The mapping appears to be fully aware of road names, so logically providing an indicator if the road name changes or if the junction is quite obviously a t junction shouldn't really be difficult to implement. Multiple variants of car navigation software already have this as a minimum standard

I'm hopeful that a Garmin staff member can provide a response

  • Usually, issues like this are do to errors in the map data.  Which maps are you using and in what area?

  • I'm using software version 5.50 with Map : Routable Cycle map of Europe 2020.10

I'm in the UK, cycling in Hampshire as well as parts of Dorset and Wiltshire

Are there more reliable options in terms of mapping?

  • I'm using the OSM based OpenFietsmap. There is a European version and also a Great-Britain & Ireland subset. http://www.openfietsmap.nl/downloads/europe

I never have issues like reported in this thread and navigation is accurate (riding in The Netherlands). Please read the Tips & Tricks  because some special tricks are built-in, for example to avoid highways and other primary roads in favour of cycleways. An extra advantage is that you can install the OFM on the PC too, so you can prepare your routes / tracks (courses) locally for example in Basecamp.

  • Thanks bikepc01, sounds like your experience doesn't mirror mine. Not entirely sure of the relevance though.

  • I've definitely suffered from one of these foibles of Garmin navigation when riding in the UK - it never gives an instruction when you need to go straight on at a crossroads, whether or not you've got right of way. Brillant for giving warnings about corners in the road, but completely silent on the issue of needing to come to a complete halt Rolling eyes

Sorry, I came here looking for an answer as well - you're not alone.

  • The device is designed to give turn guidances, So it feels completely logical for me that no guidance is given when you go straight on at a crossing.

Right of way is not, or very sparsely coded on OSM and it depends on the routing routines that are used if right of way is signalled while riding. Both the Garmin Cycle Map and the OpenFietsMap I mentioned above are OSM based and both maps do not support signalling of right of way. Also when traffic-lights are present at a crossing your device will not tell you that or even better if the light is green or red. Also in car navigation this is not the case, so what do you expect while using a cycling-oriented navigation device and using a cycle-specific map?

  • it never gives an instruction when you need to go straight on at a crossroads, whether or not you've got right of way

Car sat navs do the same thing.  The line on the map lets you know to go straight on at crossroads though.  The maps don't have the priority of roads at junctions so even if you wanted it shown you couldn't.
