Setting auto pause

I am new to using the garmin edge 830 and was wondering if the garmin will stop while I stop on a long distance ride? Trying to find it on the garmin but not having much luck

  • Once you press start, the 830 starts recording.  Until you press stop/pause and either save or discard it, it will resume recording, even if you power it off then then power it on again.

You can set up autopause, and it will stop when you do, either "when stopped" or at a manually input speed.  I recommend the latter as being more reliable and suggest 5 or 6 kph as the threshold.  It then automatically resumes when you do.

Navigation is totally separate from recording and continues simply based on where you are whether paused or not.

  • Thanks very much, worked how to put in auto.

  • I set Auto Pause mode on "During the stop". Will auto pause be cancelled/resumed to monitor time if I just move my bicycle from point A to point B by hand? So no cycling, just moving my bike let's say closer to the table at the bar/log cabin/food kiosk/etc. I stopped by.

  • "When stopped" is a ambiguous.  AFAIK, nowhere does Garmin explain how that is determined.  Using a manually set threshold, as I describe  provides more reliable operation.  If you don't exceed that threshold moving the bike by hand, then it won't un-pause.

Note that gps position has wander so can show movement even when not moving.  This is usually slow so won't un-pause the device on it's own.  If it happens to add to your walking speed when moving your bike, it might un-pause.  Using a manually set 5-6 kph should work well...but 10 kph would be even less likely to un-pause when walking the bike.

  • OK, thanks. And another question...if anyone knows.

At this Auto Pause mode there is also the resume option with speed moving choices Turned off, Slow and Fast.

    How fast is Fast? =)

  • While I was walking the Garmin in a hand, Garmin started showing movement at the speed 3km/h, but that was all.

Auto Pause didn't resume, my trip time didn't continue.
