Complete course visible, but my ride has big gap

Hi all.

Yesterday I did a 115K (about 70 miles) ride. I plotted a course a couple of days ago and I started it on the 830 when I started my ride. The course has a dark colour, and there is a lighter colour where I rode.

After 60K I noticed that the map on my screen had problems because it was rotating the map like it lost it sense of direction. The small triangle (which is me) is still following the course exactly and the time on my garmin was still running, but the distance stopped counting. I also noticed that the lighter coloured line did not follow the piece of road that is in the bottom of my screen, but I saw a straight line going somewhere (most likely the last stored coordinate or something?).

How is it possible that the GPS seems to work (because my garmin kept following the course like it knew where I was), the time still running, but the distance froze? I would imagine that with the time and the fact that it followed the course it knows the distance and it would be possible to calculate the rest...

Somewhere around the 90K point the distance suddenly started counting again. When I analyze my activity on Strava I see only 85K instead of 115K, it recorded the time of the whole ride (so average was low), the course was completely visible without errors, but when following the distance of the course it jumps from the 60K point to the 90K point.

I hope it's clear what I mean... Sorry for the messy and maybe confusing explanation, but it confuses me too... Hope someone can tell me what happened, and even more important, if there is anything I can do about it?

Thanks!

  • Do you have Auto Pause enabled?  Are you using GPS speed, or do you have a speed sensor?  It may be that the device thought you had stopped, did the Auto Pause, and then didn't figure out that you had started again.

Good questions... I have a speed sensor, and looking at the icon in the top of the screen of my Garmin it's recognized by the device as speed sensor. But even if I would have Auto Pause enabled, why would my device think I stopped and later during riding suddenly recognized again that I was moving again??

Would you advice to disable Auto Pause? Is it known for its faulty behaviour?

  • To be honest, I was just mentioning a suggestion that I recalled seeing on these forums for a similar situation.  Not sure if it was for the 830 or some other Edge device.  In any case, I don't recall what the resolution was -- you might be able to find it by searching.

I've never understood the point of Auto Pause, so I have never used it.  It does seem likely to be a potential problem, though.

What firmware are you running on your 830?  I updated to 5.50 and it seems to work fine (and fixes one particular issue regarding gearing on SRAM AXS 12-speed), but I never had an issue with the 5.10 issue -- then again, I don't use any fancy features like route planning and courses;  I just ride.

I run firmware version 5.50, I just did the update after my last ride.

As it was the very first time I had an issue, I will take a look at the Auto Pause. If it is already disabled I will wait for the next time the issue might occur. It might be that it never returns, and maybe that has to do with the new version 5.50... Who knows. Let's see and fingers crossed.
