Course only displays on 830 with straight lines. Does not follow the road.

I loaded 2 new Courses onto my 830 Edge. Both Courses dispayed correctly on Garmin Connect. On my ride all I could see on the map on my 830 was staright-line point to point lines. The Course did not follow the road. This made navigating tricky. Somehow the Course became corrupted in the upload into the 830. I have emailed Garmin Support on this issue and am asking if anyone else has had this happen?

  • make the courses public and send link to them.

  • Hi mac27000 not sure what the purpose of doing that is? Also send the link to whom?

  • if you see the courses on Garmin Connect web, you can share with link to them.

  • dude, are you having a stroke?
    should we call an ambulance?

  • The point is to see if someone else has the same issue with the same course.  You would post the link here so someone else could try it.

  • I have the same problem with routes that have been edited or created on Garmin connect.  Courses where I load the gpx to garmin connect and send them straight to my 830 are fine but if I edit the same course in Garmin connect - to set the pace information for example - and then load it to the 830 then I get the straight line routing when I'm out on my ride.  You can't tell looking in Garmin connect it looks fine. I thought at first I might have loaded a GPX route file from RidewithGPS instead of a GPX track file but I haven't.  The result is the same as if I had loaded a GPX file.  I am now not able to change the pace info - which I use to try to get rid of the virtual partner very quickly.  Did you find a fix for this or do you still have the same problem. I'm wondering if I have a setting wrong somewhere.  I have a new 830 and have moved from a MIO so it could also be user error.

  • Do you have "turn guidance" enabled?

Navigation -> Course -> Save Course -> settings (lower right) -> Turn Guidance -> On

    Provide a link.

  • Yes, I did, I haven't changed that setting for different routes, It works fine when I don't edit a course in Garmin connect with the same settings, well I assume the same settings seeing as I haven't changed them.  I don't have a link to give you now as I have deleted all the 'dodgy' routes from Garmin Connect and my device. I can create a new one but I won't be able to prove it does the same wrong thing until tomorrow.  I was assuming the setting change required is probably in Garmin Connect rather than on the device seeing as other ones work when I don't edit them. Or that it is a bug in Garmin connect on how it saves the gpx or tcx after being edited, but now I can see there are settings at route level on the 830 that might be changed - but Turn Guidance isn't one of them.  Sorry I am new to the Garmin 830 but not to Garmin Connect.  I have created lots of running routes and successfully transferred them to my Fenix watch and followed them. I was also used to seeing straight line routing when I mistakenly used a gpx route from RidewthGPS rather than a gpx track.

  • I have a vague recollection that there was some recent problem with Garmin Connect.

    ======================

You should be seeing the track on the Garmin (the "purple" line that traces the roads/paths you want to use).

For "turn guidance", the Edges calculate a second "track", which usually follows the original track fairly closely (which makes it hard to tell that there are actually two tracks).

What you screen shows would be a useful diagnostic.

The "GPX Route" file from RWGPS is useless on the Edges.

The FIT, TCX, and GPX track files contain the same information (except FIT and TCX files can contain "course points" but those are not relevant to your issue).

These end-up as FIT files in \Garmin\Courses and those are another thing to look at.

  • I will try to replicate the problem tomorrow and get some screen shots too. Thank you.
