Different navigation screen than I'm used to

I like uploading .TCX files that I create on Ride With GPS to Garmin Connect, and then I sync them to my Garmin 830.

Lately, I started seeing this screen which I've never seen before on my Garmin.  Does this have something to do with me uploading a .FIT file instead of a .TCX?

Now I see this new screen (as well as the one below, which I've always seen on turns):

I used to only see this screen on turns:

  • The top image is the "course points" page.

You'll only see it if you have "course points" in the file (either FIT or TCX) and have "course points" enabled on the Edge.

"Course points" are an alternative form of turn instructions (they are embedded in the file). They are intended for units that don't use maps but they can be useful on units that use maps.

The big white arrow (like on the second image) are "turn guidance". That gets calculated by the device (if you have "Turn guidance" enabled).

You can get a list of the "turn guidance" turns by tapping on the text at the top of the map.

  • Very cool, thanks for your help!

One quick follow up -- is it possible to make the Garmin popup a turn and customize the text it reads for special instruction, such as "Turn onto sidewalk" or "Turn right into Rest Stop" or "Cross onto unpaved path"

  • You can add custom cues in RWGPS (if you have a paid subscription). These (along with the cues RWGPS generates automatically) get written out as "course points" in FIT or TCX files. You can also edit the automatically generated cues.

You can use your own text but it has to be really short (like 10 chars).

I believe you can also add custom ones in Garmin Connect. Garmin Connect didn't always choose to include the course points, depending in the unit the course was being sent to. But they may have changed that (and you might always get them if you export as FIT).

The "course points" get displayed as white text on black on the bottom of the screen as you get near them (at least, that's how they work on my 1030).

  • Manually added course points are always exported from GC. Auto-generated course points are only added for units that don't have routable maps.
