Downloaded course jagged and unusable

My Edge 530 is grossly downsampling courses when downloaded to the unit making them jagged and unusable.  Instead of tracking a curve when the track clearrly does, even a minor curve, the unit seems to store only every 5th or less points therefore making the course go off the road and back on.  As a result I am constantly getting "Off Course" then "Course Found".  Each time it's off course ClimbPro is disabled, routing is disabled, and I get told to make a U-turn.

I am creating the course by simply converting a previous ride track to a Course in Garmin Connect online, then downloading into the Edge 530.  I've tried it both through Garmin Connect Mobile and thru Garmin Express via USB to my computer and get the same result.

Below are 3 images to show what the course looks like.  The first (left) image is what the course looks like in the Edge 530.  You can see it is severely downsampled and makes straight lines off the road around each curve.  The middle image is what the course looks like on Garmin Connect online after creating it from a previous ride.  This is the source course that is downloaded.  You'll see it is correct when Garmin Connect creates the course from he previous ride.  The third image (right) is what the previous ride I was creating the course from looks like.  You'll it tracks the road as one would expect.

I'm running 5.10 firmware as I have not received the 5.50 update yet, but it does not sound like there was a code fix for this in 5.50 based on the release notes.

Has anyone else seen this?  Is there some setting in the device somewhere I'm missing?  How does one solve this?

  • If you're looking at the course as downloaded, you'll see whatever data was in the course.  To improve upon that, you need to have the 530 navigate it, whereby it takes that downloaded data, matches it up to its internal map, and generates an accurate course and turn instructions based on that.

It's also best to post and ask in the 530 forum rather than the 830 forum.

  • The device isn't down-sampling. All of the devices use whatever they are given.

Maybe, provide a link to the course?

  • "matches it up to its internal map, and generates an accurate course and turn instructions based on that."

This is correct but not where the problem is.

The off-course warnings result from "you" exceeding some distance away from the track.

The problem the OP is having is that the "track" (such as it is) isn't following the roads he is riding on.

The problem is that the track is bad.

  • Correctly stated, the issue is that the track ends up bad in the unit.  When I navigated this course it went "off course" after each inflection point you see in the track, then back to "course found" for a split second as I crossed the next point, then "off course" immediately again.  The course itself is fine as can be seen in the original source it came from and what's in Garmin Connect.  It's something wrong in the Edge that took that course and made it jagged as if it was a set of individual points instead of navigating a road.

Sorry about the post in the 830 forum, no clue how that happened as I was in the 530 forum when I initiated the post.  I'll repost in the 530 forum (or at least try again).

  • The track is bad. The unit did not make it bad.

(Beyond that, I don't know why.)

  • I was thinking the same thing but it happens on every recorded track I convert to a course, whether recorded recently from my 530 or years ago from my then 520.  It does not happen on a track hand created in Garmin Connect online.  Thus I was hoping there is some setting I'm missing in the process.  I guess a call to Garmin support is in order.  Though since there is a code update in the midst of the rollout process, they'll probably want me to wait until that is complete so they can see if the new release is still doing it.  Thanks for your thoughts and confirmation that at least I'm not missing something.

  • Are you having the 530 navigate the course, or are you only following the course?   Following the course, you'll get whatever was downloaded to the 530, including any embedded turn instructions.  Navigating it, the 530 recreates the course using its resident map, and generates turn instructions based on that, so it will accurately follow the 530's map.
