How can i re-route?

Today i used my Edge 830 for the first time. I had downloaded a route from my home for 40km west in a loop back to my home. I had prepared this route with the tools on the Garming Connect website. Road cycling, 40km, loop. What did i get?

I loved the route at first going down quiet lanes. Took a left turn then a right turn then came to gate. Checked the map. I was on route still, but the gate took me through dirt paths so turned around. For the rest of my ride i was told to U-turn for 20km. Why on earth can't i re-route? This is such an obvious feature i just can't believe how Garmin can miss it out. I checked my other saved routes to find that 2 others take me off-road too. I don't have even a gravel bike. My disappointment is complete.

  • First:

Without your route, there is not much to say. My 830 reroutes as soon as I am approx 100m away from the route.

    Second:

If the underlying map is wrong, Garmin can't do anything about the routes going over gravel. But you can fix it yourself easy if you correct the streets/routes wich are gravel in OpenStreetMaps. Its fast and easy.

Thank you for your words. If I had been able to return to route it would have been fine. The off road part of the route was about 1.5 miles and my 830 just said to uturn and never gave up. I'm now trying strava with the free trial and non of the routes it's offered me go off road thank goodness. I think that garmin are perfectly capable of not making damaging mistakes like this off road routing problem. I have emailed them before with other issues and they just answer stock questions and never the question I ask. Maybe I should send the 830 back and go for a wahoo.

  • Once you rejoin the course, normal navigation will resume.  When off course, I found it best/easiest to decide the most expedient way to rejoin the course by looking at the map,  Once I'm back on the course, it's all good again.

For the 830, roads, paths, and ways only exist as information coded into the resident map's database.  The accuracy and currency of that information can change, as will how the 830 interprets it.

I basically never rely on any automatic routing and lay out all my ride beforehand using many available resources depending on how particular I'm going to be about it.  That includes Strava heat maps to show where people actually ride, OSM and other maps to show what roads and trails exist, street view and satellite views, as well as rider reports.

  • For me, for every ride i did with a preloaded course, it asks me if i want to allow recalculation, as soon as i leave the course. If I go back on it it finds again the course and informs me about.

Since many years I use RideWithGps for creating my routes(the free account allows you this). I find it at least 4-5 times better than Garmin or the newly introduced Strava option.

And, since some days it can also directly add your newly created routes to the courses on device, as soon as you sync with GarminConnect. (no additional click, no IQ additional app needed anymore)
