Edge 830 navigation detour and use of highways

Hi all,

My Garmin Edge 830 continuously redirects me completely. In doing so, I consciously are consistently guided on highways. I have already tried a lot to turn off various things, change maps and settings, but the Garmin continues to send me over highways anyway. The detour is less when I change some settings.

Who can help me with the right settings? Or are these really bugs in the cards? See the below examples. Example 3 is the best, but still over the highways.

Example 1:

Standard after factory reset:

Mode: road cycling

Fastest way by google 20-21km

By Garmin: From Zoetermeer to Leiden, To Utrecht, To Niewegein, to Gouda

Route 1_1

Route 1_3

Example:

Everything off (include trendline pop)

Mode: road cycling

Fastest way by google 20-21km

By Garmin: From Zoetermeer to Leiden to Gouda (double amount of kilomters)

Route 2_1

Route 2_2

Example 3:

Mode with only highways on

Mode: road cycling

Fastest way by google 20-21km

By Garmin: From Zoetermeer over the highway to Gouda (so really fast, but not allowed to drive with my road bike on the highway)

Route 3_1

Route 3_2

Thanks a lot,

Tim

  • It looks like the unit is using the base map for navigation.

Have you replaced the standard maps with your own maps? If so check that those maps are routable. The Edge thinks that the detailed maps you have are not routable so is using the base map.

Also what software build are you on? I think the use of base map for navigation was one of the issues addressed in the beat release.

  • I have not put my own maps on it and use the same maps as after the factory reset.

I just turned off the Base map, with the result:
Zoetermeer to Gouda: by highway (same route as with base map on)
Zoetermeer to The Hague: on provincial roads, so no real highways anymore, but still impossible and not allowed to cycle on (the route is different than with base map on).

I am using the software version 5.10 (218afd79709842). GPS version 2.90

Is there anything else which can cause this? I have the following maps available at the moment:
    - INTL Standard Basemap, NR
    - Garmin Cycle Map EU, North East, 2020.10
    - Garmin DEM Map EU 2017.20
    - Garmin Geocode MAP EU 2020.10
    - Garmin Cycle Map EU, South West, 2020.10

  • Try reinstalling the Maps via Garmin Express.

  • I opened a Bug Report months ago and can confirm that this issue still is not fixed.

    https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-830/164773/garmin-830-calculates-a-way-to-long-route

I just don't understand why this does not have a higher priority. It's one of the devices main features.

  • After installing the maps again by Garmin Express, it works properly again on my 2 test routes.
Hopefully I'll get some more trust in my Garmin within the next rides. I'll keep you posted if not.
I still have INTL Standard Basemap, NR off.

  • I fully understand your problem. Please try aswell to reinstall the maps by Garmin Express and turn INTL Standard Basemap, NR off in your Garmin.I alsdo have only highways on in the option: avoid roads.
I'm gonna play with these settings the next days, but the basic fastest route works now.
    Good Luck!

  • Thanks for the hint, but it didn't work for me. :/

I have reinstalled the Maps via Garmin Express, afterwards I have deactivated "INTL Standard Basemap, NR".

Now if I select a POI to navigate to, the route calculation fails immediately with an error, that the route cannot be calculated. :/

If I activate the Basemap again, the calculation works, but still with the same result.

Are you on the latest stable or on the latest beta version?
