How do I stop my Edge 830 from recalculating my routes?

I do a lot of long rides through areas that are poorly mapped. I make my own routes on third-party software (usually plot-a-route) and include my own directions as required. When I upload these routes to my Edge 830 it seems to recalculate them. It never improves them. It takes out my notes that include things like water stops, and instead adds a whole lot of instructions that tell me to continue straight on. It changes the route from where the trail is to where the device incorrectly thinks the trail is, and then when I ride down the trail it spends a lot of time telling me that I am going the wrong way. Is there a way I can stop this @!@!# device from messing with my routes?

  • In the settings for the route itself make sure course points are turned on.

Turn off turn guidance (page 12 in the manual). Navigation > Courses > Saved Courses > hamburger menu > Turn turn guidance off.

Now you can follow a course and the unit won't calculate its own directions.  The course points will pop up at their location and display whatever you have written in them.

  • Fantastic! Sitting at my desk it looks like it has worked, AND made it so the course just loads in a decent time! Will have to go out to actually test it, but for now, thank you so much!
