New Edge 830 Public Beta 5.48 Now Available

A new Beta software (5.48) for the Edge 830 has been released. Full change log, instructions, and software for installing the beta can be found Here.

  • For any issues that you encounter please fill out the form included in the download and attach it to an email to [email protected]. Please note that you may not get a response to the email unless we need more information on the issue you report.
  • Although this software is believed to be reliable, it has not yet been released for production and should be used at your own risk.

(Note: Please include a copy of your debugging folder in your response email if you experience any issues)

Changes made from version 5.44 to 5.48:

  • Fixed an issue with sensor connectivity.
  • Added diagnostics to help track down an issue where the device can lock up.
  • Loaded it yesterday.

After update I did a Reset & Delete data but the device got stuck at Garmin logo (left it for 10 minutes like that).

It rebooted after pressing power button for 10 seconds.

Then I tried again Reset & Delete data and this time worked fine.

Did a 4 hour ride without any major issues (except for GPS accuracy which I will detail in another post).

  • When can we expect a new official firmware? 5 months since the last one and they have implemented many things. I don't trust so much beta firmware

  • Sometimes, there is no stability difference between betas and official releases

  • And sometimes there is. So unless you can guarantee the next beta is as stable as an official release I don't see your point.

Had you said, sometimes there is no instability difference, I'd have no objection! ;)

  • Of course it is nice if Garmin shares a beta-release as kind of a preview of what will hopefully soon come as a consolidated release. But as with any beta-release at most companies, also Garmin tells it "should be used at your own risk", i.e. if you have problems with, they may or may not help you, and can in any case not be held liable.

Now, if Garmin produces a series of consecutive beta-releases over a period of 5 months without any production release in between, Garmin is rather making the "should be used at your own risk" its standard policy. Take it or leave it.

The lack of more frequent production releases points IMHO to a software quality assurance problem at Garmin - maybe a lack of dedicated, qualified testing engineers. Yes, full coverage testing costs money and takes time. Throwing beta-releases to the public means shifting the testing job to (cheap!) testers: us, the customers, who bought the product expecting a well-tested, high-quality device.

100% agreed. If the Karoo 2 shapes up to be a winner - i.e., has a beeper - I'm switching and never coming back to garmin.

  • Maybe Garmins Topnotched Engineers are nowhere to be found at this very moment while they keep on coming up with newer models with less software support.

  • Garmin was always famous for "use at your own risk" stable software. Nothing new.

  • I updated to 5.48 Beta from the previous one, before I went on a ride today.

I'm using Varia RTL 510 and a Garmin HRM. I didn't follow a planned route.

The Varia failed to spot a fast moving motorcycle (on a straight road). Which is the first time it's failed to detect anything.

The radar disconnected just once  later in the ride.

And it failed to auto upload the ride when the ride was over.

  • I switched to Karoo 1 and will order the Karoo 2.
    Garmin's a piece of junk.
Even Wahoo is miles better than Garmin.
