Edge 830 GPS signal acquired but not recording KM's

Hey Guys,

Last week i upgraded to a new Edge 830 after 4 years using an Edge 520. Unfortunately i've had issues with my new 830 every ride i've used it. When i start my ride, everything is ok and the GPS signal is acquired quickly. Then, a few KM's into my ride, it will stop logging the KM's i'm covering, almost like it thinks i'm standing still. The weird thing is that while my KM's aren't being recorded, my GPS signal is showing 2-3m accuracy and 5 bars of strength.

Sometime later in he ride, it will start recording the KM's again like normal and my map will show my correct location. Sometimes this takes 10 or 20km's to start working again. When i get home i'm able to use Strava's distance correct feature to fix my ride up, but its annoying for a brand new unit to be having these problems consistently. I've upgraded the software to 5.44 BETA and that doesn't seem to have made a difference. I'm using the device on GPS + GLONASS. I've tried using just GPS and the same thing happens.

Any ideas on how to fix this issue? Or does it seem like a faulty head unit?

  • I would check the auto pause setting.  If it's high, you might be dropping below the threshold speed and the unit thinks you are stopped. I doubt Henthis is likely, but it's easy to check.

    Next I would check your strava activity to see if other data (like speed and elevation) are being recorded during this period. 

  • This sounds like it’s relayed to the loss of satellites issue that appears to plague the 830. 

    Have you got a speed sensor? Presuming not as that would keep logging the KMs for you. But it sounds like you’re losing satellites and then getting them back later. 

    No fix currently and reading other posts, it’s been here a long time. Potentially a model killer so it doesn’t seem like Garmin want to admit it as it would be expensive for them to have to replace everyone’s 830 or be the subject of a class action. 

  • The OP states he has a satellite signal. 

    In my limited experience, when you have intermittent satellite reception, the Strava activity track will show a straight line between the points and the speed will be unreasonably high. 

  • Hi, i have same problem. I have 830 from x-mas ( gift from wife ). Before I have 510 without any problems. I try any firmwares, factory reset, etc. Nothing works. Last month goes 830 to seller and Garmin send me new 830, but after second activity same problem.. Its pity :(

    I've never used a speed sensor, as the GPS was always good on my 520 and i never had any issues. Elevation and speed still being recorded, just not distance and current location, even with the head unit showing a strong GPS signal. After reading about how many issues everybody is having with the 830, i decided to return it and replace it with a Wahoo Elemnt Roam.

  • Has anyone resolved this issue? My 830 worked perfectly for two months. The last two rides it's been off by 5.7 and 8 miles. I can see while I'm watching the odometer that the miles are not clicking over. Eg, it may read 32.1m and half a mile later it'll click over to 31.2. 

  • Mines been working flawlessly for as long as I can remember now. 

    I’ve even added a CIQ app to monitor and record the gps connectivity and it never drops and never has problems now. 

    If you’re using the up to date firmware you may have a faulty device..? Have you checked to see what has better coverage in your area in terms of satellite and changing your settings accordingly?

  • I'm in LA, no trees over head or other possible issues, and it's been flawless on the last 100 rides. It's only been the last two days that the odometer has been measuring incorrectly.

  • The trees don’t affect satellite placement. I think you’re thinking more of poor reception due to obstruction. I’m talking about what satellites you have above you in that location. 

    Some areas have better cover with different satellite types. Download an app to your smart phone and see what’s above you at a set time. 

    This is why glonass works well for some and not others. And why some are better off with gps only for example. 

    But your issue sounds more like a local fault. Likely with your device..?
