830 Locked Up During Ride - Irritating

Have used 830 for about two months with no problems.  Am running SV 5.10  About 80 miles into a ride this past Sunday, the 830 suddenly dropped connection to my Stages PM and my HRM.  Recorded the rest of the ride without problem.  However, after pressing the Stop button upon completion of the ride, the 830 froze completely.  Had to do a hard reboot to be able to save and upload the ride.  On my next ride, no problems so I sort forgot abt the Sunday mishap.  Today, the 830 locked up 27 miles into a 50 mile ride.  Did a hard reboot when arriving at home.  Could save the 27 mile part of the ride but the remaining 23 miles are lost.  Irritating.  Is this a warranty issue?  The 830 has turned completely unreliable.  Seems that it may be necessary to run a second device as backup.  This is rather ridiculous.  Is Garmin actively working to fix this problem given that it seems to be an issue for many 830 users?

  • Hi,

new beta software change log indicates, among many others, also some fixes of the issues you experience:

    • Fixed an issue with sensors dropping out.
    • Fixed an issue where the device could become unresponsive.
    • Made stability improvements including a fix for a potential device freeze.
    • Fixed an issue that could cause the device to lock up.

You may consider installing and testing the 5.34 beta software or wait a for an official roll out of the final version.

  • The 5.34 didn't help. I use it for a while, but the same happened to me, twice this week

  • There’s a new 5.44 version that has more debugging info to help diagnose freezing.

Probably won’t solve your issue but since you seem to have a chronic situation you may be able to reproduce the issue and send the debug info to Garmin so they can figure it out.

Mine does exactly the same thing. Sent it back to Colorado cyclists for a new unit. I thought the unit tells you when to update firmware??

  • funny this popped up as mine froze yesterday for the first time ever mid-ride. i had no idea what to do at the time (turns out you hold down the power button for like 30 seconds). really frustrating

  • Mine locked up today...it's a good feeling to know you spent a ton of money on something that the reliability goes south on...LAME!!!!  This is after the latest update....version 5.50...worked flawlessly before the update.

  • Mine locked up today 14 miles into a ride. Totally frozen, even the power button does nothing. Newest firmware update applied a few days ago. Not even sure how to reset it at this point as holding down the power does nothing. The unit is maybe one month old and the buggiest piece of hardware I have ever owned.

  • Just FYI, this lockup/freeze is on software version 6.00

  • same here, never had this problem before version 6.00

  • Same with me.  Super-frustrating.  I posted about it earlier this week.  I actually found that after holding down the power button for a while, like at least 30-45 seconds, would hard-reset it.
