Refuses to install new maps

Express shows new Europe map. It tries to install then returns an error, no other explanation.

The Map size is shown as 8,78 GB which is more than the space on the Edge. There are no strange files on the Edge. I have searched it for any large file but there isn't.

Its installed map updates before without any problems.

Any idea what could be the problem now?

  • What desktop do you have? PC or Mac?

  • Then it is not problem with staying deleted files in trash. My 830 shows 8.75 GB used and 5.60 GB empty space but map update ended up well. So it does not seem to be problem of space in your case.

  • Tried it on an old laptop and it worked, very odd

I bought an 830 last year with North American maps installed. I was traveling to Europe so I bought the European map from Garmin.

When I couldn’t install the European Maps I contacted Garmin, they gave me the following installation instructions. I followed them and it all worked fine,

Here is a link to the article I mentioned. Also copy and pasted below:

"Not Enough Space" Message When Installing Additional Mapping to an Edge Device That Does Not Support an SD Card

The error Not Enough Space can occur when attempting to install Europe maps to a device that originally came with North American maps or vice versa if your device does not support the use of an SD card:

To resolve this error, you will need to delete the preloaded map files from the device to create enough available space for the newly purchased map. This would include all .img, .gma, and .unl files (with the exception of gmaptz.img). For specific instructions, select your operating system below:

IMPORTANT: Do not delete any files other than the recommended .img, .gma, and .unl files; deleting necessary files from the device can cause adverse performance issues.

    Windows:

      • Plug the device into a computer
      • Press Windows key + E
      • Select This PC (Windows 10 only)
      • Double-click the Garmin device drive
      • Double-click the Garmin folder
      • Select all .img.gma, and .unl files except for gmaptz.img
      • Press Delete on the keyboard
      • Confirm to delete the selected files

    Mac:

IMPORTANT: Do not delete any files other than the recommended .img, .gma, and .unl files; deleting necessary files from the device can cause adverse performance issues.

      • Plug the device into the computer
      • Open Finder
      • Select Go in the menu bar
      • Select Computer
      • Double-click the Garmin device drive
      • Double-click the Garmin folder
      • Select  all .img.gma, and .unl files except for gmaptz.img and drag the files to trash*
      • Empty the Trash

After deleting the preloaded map files, return to Garmin Express to install the newly purchased map:

    1. Launch Garmin Express
      • Windows: Either double-click the express icon in the system tray (next to the time), double-click the shortcut on the desktop, or search for Garmin Express in the Start menu.
      • Mac: Garmin Express can be found in the Applications folder in Finder.
    2. Select the desired device
    3. Select Tools & Content
    4. Select the Purchased tab
    5. Select the cloud icon

    1.   to download the map

If you later wish to switch back to the maps that originally came with your device you will need to repeat the steps to delete all .img, .gma, and .unl files (with the exception of gmaptz.img) and then reinstall the original maps using Garmin Express. To reinstall your original maps:

    3. Select Map Options
    4. Select Reinstall Map
  • I would just try again.  This time, it worked first time for me.  Previous times its failed a few times before working.

  • I have the European maps pre-installed on my Edge 830 and want to take it with me to US. Therfore I bought the Cycle Map North America. But I could not install the map from the cloud.  I tried your instructions above but it didn't work. Still not enough space after removing the files. I also contacted Garmin support but they had no idea how to solve this problem.

  • We're sorry to hear that you're experiencing this. I see that we have had some other reports of this recently and have escalated this. Please continue to work with your local support as they will be able to get the files necessary to add you to this case so we can work towards a resolution for you.

  • I have the Euro maps pre-installed on my Edge 530. I purchased the Cycle Map North America and followed the detailed instructions above to no avail. It's not working. I keep getting the same error: "Not Enough Space" error despite having over 15GB free on the unit. Please advise.

  • This worked for me...as long as you don't delete the basemap...(gmapbmap) when you delete the other img, unl and gma files.  I accidentally copied it off of the 830 and the map would load as blank.  As soon as I copied it back on the entire Euromap was there.
