Does the Strava popular segments feature work on the 830?

The starred segments work fine on my 830. But I was hoping that the "popular segments" feature would pick up additional segments automatically no matter where I ride. The Strava page says:

Popular Strava Segments on Your Garmin

Live Segments on compatible Edge devices include starred segments, goal segments and a selection of popular segments near your location

I have this enabled, but I don't think I have ever gotten a segment aside from the ones I had starred. I have only 22 starred segments.

Is there something else I need to do to make this work?

Does "near your location" mean near where I start the ride, or near my Strava profile address?

I see a lot more segments that what I've "starred" on my 830. I would think "near your location" is relative to where you're starting to ride.

Yeah, I now realize that I do see segments beyond what I have starred, but only a few and for segments that are obviously very "popular". In hindsight, I can see how that has to be the case. When I start a ride, I may go in any direction and for any length of time. There's got to be thousands of segments I might take, so it must pick a small number, and depending on where I ride, I might run into a few of them. Would that make sense?

That would also mean that the segments are loaded when I start the ride or when I turn on the Garmin, and don't change dynamically as ride around
