Is it new or refurbished?

Hey, I just got a brand new Edge 830 Sensor Bundle. I may be wrong, but a couple of things are bugging me. First, there was no factory seal on the box. Second, the battery was 0% and third, the sensors list in the menu was populated with one HR, one cadence and one speed sensor out of the box. The HR appears to be the one the unit came with. I don't remember my previous Edge 510 to have had this. Are all these things normal or could my unit be a refurbished one? The unit itself or the sensors do not appear to have been used.

  • Was it from a reputable source? I've owned several Garmin devices over the years and have never had it arrive with the battery completely dead and the box not sealed. Garmin refurbs can be virtually indistinguishable from new, but this is not what you paid for. If it is a refurb it doesn't  sound like an official Garmin refurb since they would have cleared out the device so no user data would be on it.

  • If it is a bundle then then the sensors are pre-paired at the factory, Not sure why the box was not sealed though.

It was from the biggest online bike retailer in Germany. I usually trust them. I've watched all the unboxing videos on youtube I could find and none of the boxes seemed to have had a factory seal. Could anyone confirm yours came without a factory seal as well? If that's the case, the only weird thing left would be the 0% battery..

  • Mine was new in a bundle. Battery was zero upon opening.

  • I have not yet seen a refurbished Edge 830 for sale.

I bought a refurbished Edge 800 a few years ago. I came in a white box with black printing and had an odd serial number. I'm sure Garmin support can tell you if the unit was refurbished if you call them and provide the serial number.

  • A refurb unit doesn't come in an original Garmin Box... usually in a bubble wrap only.

So is it normal for a brand new box to come without a factory seal?

  • I think its normal since mine was not sealed/taped either just in a Garmin box (not the bundle), bought it from a local LBS, it came with like 60% battery out of the box, if your in doubt about it you can still return or exchanged it (if still applicable)

  • In the past couple of weeks I bought two brand new Garmin items (not Edges) and neither box was taped or sealed.

Edit:  I'll mention that have received two refurbed 820s from Garmin and they came wrapped in bubble wrap in a plain box with no ancillary packaging, materials or items.  Those were both indistinguishable from new and made me wonder if they actually refurb units, or simply supply new ones under the guise of refurbs.  7-8 years ago I got refurbed 705s and it was the same.

  • I received all my brand new Garmin devices ( Edge, VA3, Varia and all Sensors) just in a Garmin Box not sealed or taped... the refurbs i received though are sealed in a bubble wrap only no Garmin box.
