Map "Satellite View" option?

Is there an option to change the map to display a google style "satellite view" instead of a standard map view? I'm thinking this would help to visually find new paths which aren't identified on the standard map view whilst being out on the bike.

  • No there is not.  The maps do not contain any satellite images.  They only contain what you currently see.  It would make the map files too big to include such data and would cost huge amounts of money to obtain the imagery.

  • Actually the 830 is identified as compatible with Garmin's Birdseye subscription.  So satellite view is possible, but as Wongataa points out, does take additional storage space.

Another option that has worked on other edge devices is to create a custom map following the steps on this support link.  Despite not being listed, I know it works on the Edge 705 and Edge 810.  I have not tried it on my Edge 830.

  • I have not tried it on any Edge units, but certainly on the units with smaller screens like the 830, I believe the relatively small size and low resolution of the screen would severely hamper its usefulness.  It's bad enough just looking at maps.  The usual remedy is to use your computer (or phone) to research and lay out courses to download to your Edge.
