Using Edge 830 with Fenix 6 Sapphire.

What is the best way to best use Fenix 6 and Edge 830 together for cycling/mountain biking? I want to get the most accurate information as well as see my heart rate data on the Edge 830 while I ride. I’m also having a tough time syncing to Strava. I’m new to Garmin products as a recent convert from the Apple Watch. I have an iPhone and MacBook Pro for syncing.

  • I have exactly the same setup - although no field test for 830 due to winter here in Austria.
What I have learned so far:

If you want the activity minutes from cycling you need to wear the Fenix 6 during cycling.

Quickest way to start HR-transponding to 830 is:

    Down till you have HR

    Select

    Long Press up

    Select

    Down 3x

    Select

This will bring HR to 830 without starting an activity on Fenix.(You need to search for HR sensor on edge one time once sending is activated)

I still need to test the result of having cycling activity on fenix and edge at the same time.

Improvement possibilities I see so far:

    * Autostart HR transmit when activity is started on edge, maybe via bluetooth tell fenix to send

    * Count bike activities from edge to activity minutes (for those wearing an HR strap and want to leave the watch at home.

  • 1. Enable Physio TrueUp - this will sync training metrics across both devices.

    2. On your watch, enable HR broadcasting, then pair the F6 as an HR sensor on the Edge. Note that the vibration through the handlebars and wrist flexing means many people find that wrist HR is less accurate while road and MTBing (works well for indoor cycling). You can do this without starting an activity on the F6, although HR is more accurate when an activity is running on the F6 than in 24/7 monitoring mode. You can discard rather than saving on the F6 at the end of the activity to avoid duplication (or just open the activity without starting it).

Just to make it clear... do I need to start an activity on both devices? I use/train with the 830 and want to use the Fenix 6 as HR monitor. I know how to do that.

If I start 'cycling' on the watch and 'navigate' on the 830, will they sync up? Or is enabling HR broadcast only needed?

  • On your watch, go to your heart rate widget, hold "up" until the menu comes up, and scroll down to "Broadcast Heart Rate". Select that.

On your Edge, go to Menu/Sensors/Add Sensor/Heart Rate. Your watch, while broadcasting, should show up. Choose to connect to it.

When you start your rides, remember to set your watch to broadcast heart rate. You do not need to start an activity on your watch. Once you have paired your watch once, the edge should find it automatically when you are broadcasting. If you start a ride without it broadcasting, you may have to go to Sensors/Fenix HR/Connect in order for it to connect.

I may have the method of getting the watch to broadcast a little off, since it's based on my 935, but it's probably similar, if not exactly the same.

Okay, just thought it was an automatic kinda feature, where Garmin units share from one to another. Just did a bike ride, and the HR from the watch (not broadcast) is there in Garmin connect, but not linked to the workout. Kinda sucks

  • I think that the reason that they don't do this is that your watch doesn't record your heart rate at 1-second intervals when you're not in an activity.

  • You don’t need to record but would be nice feature to have paired F6 and Edge so when you start activity on edge it would automatically turn on HR broadcasting from F6 or whatever you set. This way it seems easier to me just put on the chest band then pressing buttons etc. there is so much more that could be transferred from watch to edge that is mind boggling that nobody mentions it in the reviews. For me it is a major flaw .

  • You can set up a Hotkey on the Fenix to start broadcasting HR with a single button press. It is mind boggling and a major flaw in humanity that someone can be sufficiently passionate about cycling to justify a dedicated cycle computer, but too lazy to press a single button on their watch.

  • Thank you for a great tip, setting up a hotkey is a great idea and I think is should have been the answer to the question asked by the unknown user. ! I have to admit I am new to the whole garmin ecosystem and I am lazy to bother finding the right information. I already found the same solution as you suggest on reddit where is also important note that broadcast is via ANT+ and not Bluetooth which is why edge is unable to access fenix and "ask it to start the broadcast"

Still, I find it sad that there is so many people using both devices together and this thread is here for 2 years and garmin hasn´t resolved this so you have two option from which neither includes user friendly start of activity with one single button.
and at the price of these two device it is mindboggling that you actually have to search for the info. Being passionate about cycling doesn´t mean a person is passionate about pressing thousands of buttons.

When you navigate through a route that you have planned all you want is an extra more button being pressed.
