I have the habit of updating once a year as I live in an area where there are no significant changes made to roads and bike paths. Older data won't be dramatically out of date. If you plan a tour, however, I would consider updating to the latest release.
Your Garmin Edge 830 likely comes preloaded with European maps. Since you live in the UK, it's best to update before 31st of January to get all new data. After that, you should probably consult with your government. :)
SiCassidy Your device came preloaded with the Europe Cycle Map. In order to update them to increase the detail and add new developments you will need to install the update. Please be prepared this can take several hours depending on your internet speed.
