"Back to start" navigation issue

Hello,

since some time, when I hit "Back to start" during a ride, the calculation is completely wrong: if there are let's say around 20-30 km back, the calculated track is sometimes more than 100 km (!!!), taking it on completely wrong direction/roads. This happens no matter if I was following a track or it was just a free ride. I remember this feature used to work as expected.

Anyone else experiencing that? I am on software 5.10.

BTW: riding a preloaded course works as expected, with turns announced and roads followed, including road names.

  •  Thanks for the update, Can you provide me with an activity where you tried to use the "back to start" feature for review?

  • I cannot comment on the back to start directly, but I have tried to use on-device routing and have found it to be useless. I have compared my old 810 with the 830 and had routes of 11 miles from the 810 turned into 30 mile routes by the 830 (same settings for routing in both). The advertising by Garmin where they say the 830 lets you ride like a local seems to be somewhat inaccurate. I contacted Garmin 6 months ago, with examples, and apparently they are looking into it.

See a couple of examples where I had the issue - but like I said, it's universal, doesn't matter the particular conditions.

  • See a fresh new activity from today: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/4476120662.

About halfway through, I hit the Back to start using the most direct route. The calculated route had nothing to do with even the most remote way back - it wanted to took me on some complete weird detours. See screenshots from 2 different points on the way back, where you can see that despite having around 15km till finish, the suggested route was more than 60 (!!!)

For the record, on data profile I have navigation set without Popularity routing (tried with it on as well), routing mode Road cycling, Calculation Minimize distance, Lock on road On, and tried both with and without Paved roads.

Please help - Navigation is completely useless in Edge 830.

  • It’s got to be down to the avoidances and the classification of the roads in your area. I’d have to dive into the OSM data to check but that would be my hunch.
Following a course is very different than A to B routing directly on the Edge and back home along the most direct route is a type of A to B navigation.
Can you confirm the avoidances that you have set please?
One thing that might work for you is to try a different map like Openfiets. These use the same raw OSM data as the Garmin Cycle Maps but they are compiled in a different way which may result in better routing for your area.

  • Avoidances are set only for Major Highways and Toll Roads. Then I tried with Unpaved Roads both on and off, to exclude the case when it might thing the road ahead is unpaved. Road networks is clearly there, down to the most narrow path, including topo characteristics - so there is no excuse to not use the direct road ahead to destination, see the screenshot.

One more info: the maps I have are INTL Standard Basemap, Garmin Cycle Map EU Northeast 2019.10, Garmin Cycle Map EU Southwest 2019.10, Garmin DEM Map EU 2017.20, Garmin Geocode Map EU 2019.10 - all of them Enabled. Should all of them be enabled?

    Thanks, Catalin

  • It looks like the unit is using the basemap and not the detailed map to compute the route.

What build do you have on the Edge?

  • I don't think this is the case, at least for me. For example, the route from A to C may be stupid, but if I break the route into two, then the sections A to B, then B to C make much more sense. Besides, roads not on the base map are used. At least for me, Garmin's advertised "Ride like a local" is still not good.

  • I have 5.10 software on the unit.

  •  are you also interested in runs with FR945? There will happen the same, it will go back on the run but not ahead on the shorter way.

For example, I used "back to start" on about minute 25 on this example and It told me to turn around. I ran further and it recalculated and it insisted on returning, even on minute 30 and further.

I only started it to see when im done so I knew the route, but it wasn't impressing at all.
