Tracking indoor training

I just bought a Wahoo Kickr Snap and am evaluating apps like Zwift, Fulgaz, RGT Cycling, etc. I do want to track my sessions there of course. The Kickr Snap connects via Bluetooth on my iPad (running the apps), I have Ant+ speed/cadence sensors on my bike that connect to my 830, and a HRM-Dual.

How can I use the 830 to track, but NOT control, my indoor training activities, while using one of the apps above simultaneously? That is, I want the 830 to keep track of speed, cadence, heart rate and zones, distance, time. If I go to the Indoor profile and press the "Indoor" button, it goes to the next screen where I have to choose how to "control" my trainer, e.g., set resistance or power level.

  • I think you can do that pretty easily by connecting the trainer to the Edge as an individual power meter, cadence sensor, and speed sensor rather than as trainer.

That's not what I do.  Rather I record the activity in Zwift, TrainerRoad, etc, then have those apps automatically upload the data to Garmin Connect.  Using that method, there is no need to use the Edge.  There may be pros/cons associated with this method that I'm not familiar with but it works for my purposes.

  • Thanks, I'll at least try your first suggestion, that is, connecting the trainer as a set of sensors, rather than as a trainer. So in case I have an app that doesn't connect to Garmin Connect, I can then still sync the data via the 830 to Garmin Connect.

However directly connecting the app to Garmin Connect is even a better idea.

  • I use a turbo trainer and I use Trainerroad to control it.  I use my Edge 830 to track the trainer rides for the exercise stats it generates.  It works just fine this way.  Don't pair the trainer as a trainer.  You should be able to pair it as a power meter (if you want the power data to be from the trainer).  You should be able to pair it as a speed sensor as well.  This way the app will control the trainer and your Garmin will just record data.

You can upload the activity from the app controlling the trainer to Garmin Connect but then you don't get any excerise stats (training load etc) as they are generated on the Edge unit itself.
