Edge 830 functionally bricked since 5.10 upgrade

Since the Edge 830 5.10 software upgrade my 830 has gone from a useful device to one that is functionally bricked. Whilst  it starts ok, at some point during a ride it loses connectivity to phone and senors and the buttons and touch screen lose functionality. A long press is required to turn off the device and then it sites with the power symbol on the screen for a few minutes before shutting down.

Have gone back to my Edge 520 in the meantime. Merry Christmas to me. :^(

  • You can try to downgrade to the firmware 5.00. The only problem is, that after downgrading you have a factory reset so all your personaly data screens and connections (sensors, smartphone, WLAN) are gone. When you want to downgrade the Firmware, you have do downlload the latest Beta Firmware 5.03. The file includes the Firmware 5.00.

What I wonder is, that you don't find the Firmware 5.10 on the update Garmin page. Here is the latest Version 5.00. When you press in the Edge 830 the update button, no new Firmware were found. The latest ist 5.00. Only when you connect the Edge 830 to the PC and start Garmin Express, then Garmin Express find the latest Firmware 5.10. Why is it so?

  • Same problem here! Edge will stop working on long rides and before this happens several times the connections to the phone and all sensors (also Radar) is lost …

I don‘t want set up the hole device again with a downgrade to Version 5.0. Would be nice to have the possibility to set up the device via the mobile app (or to have my stable running Edge 830 back  ;)

  • Yes that would be nice, that you can setup the screens with the smartphone or that you can backup your settings.

  • Interestingly enough mine started doing that exact thing (freezing, needing a hard reset) on version 5.00, it hasn't done it on 5.10 yet, but it's only been upgraded for a couple of days now.

  • First lockup in a while.  5.00 was stable.  5.10 loses connectivity with sensors and then locks up.

  • I should add, I noticed mine failed (froze) when a call was coming in, so it must have been some sort of panic in the alerting or other notification function.   Sometimes I wonder how Garmin makes aviation equipment.....

  • I had the exact problem the OP has described, and like you, I noticed it when a call came through.

The other day I noticed a download when powering up - software version is still 5.10? I was going to do a device reset, but thought I would try again before resetting.  2 long rides later  (one 2hour + and the other 4hours + with a 20minute break at the 2.5hour mark) and it’s seems to be working ok again ?

I hope this has been resolved and is not an intermittent problem, but I can’t seem to find any info on this “latest download”.  Anybody else notice the same thing?

I don’t think with mine, it was related to a call coming in,  but I can’t confirm that. Last 2x rides no calls or texts. Next time I go out I’ll get my daughter to call me and see if that triggers a freeze up.

  • I’ve had the same issues since 5.10.

phone, hr, power, cadence disconnects at the same moment. sometimes a hard reset is needed to restore services. never had issues with 5.0

    no incoming call.

Same thing. I took Dec off for cycling from a bad cold and Xmas vacation. Came back this morning and it said update availble to 5.10... I applied the update before going to bed.

When I woke up this morning, I couldn't power up the Edge 830. Had to long press it for over 20 seconds I think (mayve 30), Then I heard a beep with no sounds.

Finally did the long press power again and it woke up.

I noticed that the little green icon for the Garmin Varia would not go green, even though the left side of the screen was doing it's job of showing cars. But the green connected icon did not turn green. It stayed white.

I also had to power cycle the Garmin 830 twice during the initial start of my as it would not find a GPS. GPS signal was nil. On second power cycle it finally found GPS.

I agree 5.00 was way better. 5.10 has been crap.
