battery consumption very high with 5.10 in only on mode. In recording mode everything is ok

Hello,

I have installed the latest Firmware 5.10 on my Edge 830. I want to test how many hours will it take from 100% to 0%.

I turn on the Edge 830. I have sensors heart rate monitor, cadence and speed sensor and the Edge remote control. The smartphone is also connected.
I place the Edge 830 on the table by the window so that it has full GPS signal strength. At this time, no smartphone and sensors are connected.
I select a profile e.g. Moutainbike put I don't press the start button. I have installed two data fields that show me the expected battery life and the battery loss in percent per hour.
The Edge would be on for around 12 to 16 hours before it will going out. Consumption about 6 to 9 percent an hour.
The funny thing is, when I start recording where the Edge 830 is recording everything and the timer is running, the battery life is 30 hours and it is about 2.7 to 3 percent consumption per hour.
I also observed that the battery life is really so long. If I stop the recording and just leave the Edge on, I can literally observe how the battery capacity drops and battery life is realy about 12 to 15 hours.
I assumed that the battery life would be longer if the Edge 830 was only on and not recording. Is this a Bug in the Firmware 5.10?

  • What's the backlight doing in each situation?

  • The backlight is in automatic mode in both situation. It is doing the same in both situation.

  • Others and myself have experienced situations where despite being in automatic mode, the backlight stayed on.  This particularly happened after a notification of some sort was displayed.   IDK if that's what's going on when you haven't started recording.  If you haven't, you might try the experiment again and verify that the backlight is indeed off and stays off for the duration.

  • I have now fixed the backlight (three units after off the backlight, so the backlight is very low, lower as the automatic backlight is when no light is in the room). But the problem still exists. Without recording the battery consumption is 6 - 9 % per hour, with recording it is 2.6 - 2.8% per hour. Do you have the same problems? I used the apps Battery Life Estimate and BatteryLogger. With this two apps you can observe the battery consumption very good.

  • I wanted to test my battery as well so I have been connecting it when I'm on my trainer.  I don't use it for the trainer (Tacx Vortex) but I wanted to monitor the battery consumption.  After a couple of sessions it looks like the consumption is around 2..7%/h.  I have the HRM, cadence and speed sensors connected.  Not navigating but just on my 1st data screen.  And in the basement so no GPS.  I don't press the start button but it starts when it detects the speed sensor.

I haven't tried it when not recording.  Does it do the same when auto paused?  That would be more of an issue for me I think.

  • I make the test with auto paused and without it. Autostart is not enabled, so I have to press the button to start the recording. It is the same, with auto paused or without it. In recording mode the battery consumption is normal and without recording it is very high. I deactivated the sensors and the smartphone in the Edge 830, but nothing changed. I can try to deactivate GPS. Or I downgrade to Firmware 5.00 if it is firmware problem. The only problem is, when you downgrade the firmware all your data screens are gone.

  • Last night I tested it without GPS, Smartphone and Sensor connection. When the 830 is only on nothing changed. At recording modus I would have a running time of over 2 days an a consumption from 1.4 - 1.6 % per hour.

Ok, I thought about, what function is on when the 830 is only on and goes out when the 830 is in recording modus. Then I found it.It is the WLAN.

After turning off the Wlan, the running time is about 26 to 30 hours in on mode. So I think the Wlan was the reason for the hight battery consumption. I don't know if that is a bug in the 5.10 firmware or not. Maybe something else can testet it, if he also have a high battery consumption when WLAN is on.
