The Edge 830 can be frozen below 0℃?

May be a stuipd question, but I can't turn on my 830 this morning. It was below 0℃. I'm sure the battery was not empty, as it was around 30% after the commuting yesterday evening.

After arrival in my office, I tried to charge it, but the screen was still totally black, and no beeps. After searching online how to make a hard reboot, I tried holding power button and lap button together for about 10 seconds. Then I heard the beep. Finally I was able to turn on the unit, it showed 18% power left and could be charged then.

So is the temperature a problem? Or the unit should be replaced?

  • Operating temperature from the specifications is -20 to +55 so it should be fine.On cold days I used to put my 510 in the freezer to get it down to the outside temperature and never had any issues. It was always fine in weather where my iPhone would crap out. Not done that with my 830 though, but it should really be the same. Have you asked Garmin support? Interested to hear the answer.

  • Myself and others have reported issues with the 830 not wanting to turn on.  You could be seeing the same issue and it may not be related to the temperature.  The symptoms are like you describe except that it seems more common after just charging.

  • Have you asked Garmin support? Interested to hear the answer.

Yes, Garmin support replied me an hour ago that the 830 should not be frozen or have a large battery drop due to the temperature, and  if I meet the same problem again, they will replace it under warranty.

  • I haven't tried the 830 below 0C but  I've use my 820 down to -23C  without problems. It likely wasn't that cold internally when I switched it on as it had been in my vehicle and was out in the cold only about 10-15 minutes before I turned it on.   I rode only ~1.5 hrs so didn't really test the effect it might have had on battery life.

  • Quick test of mine in the freezer, buttons were a bit stuff but no issues with the battery, displayed value was the same as when I put it in (wasn't fully charged)

  • All right, I met the same issure again today morning. Temperature was around 0℃. Could not turn on my 830 and had to reboot.  It dropped from ~ 80% to only 16% power throughout the night around 0℃ in the garage. In the 20min ride then, it dropped from 16% to 10%, during which the temperature was 0~3℃.

I've asked Garmin support for a replacement under warranty. No reply so far, maybe due to the weekend.
