Erratic speed sensor readings with new Edge 830 / Sensors

Just got my new Edge 830 last week..during my last ride i noticed very erractic speed readings..it would show jumps like 25-30-40-22-26kms in a matter of seconds while riding on a segment that was flat..readings would be all over the place without one consistent range of speeds (I.e. 24-26kms)..what can be causing these erratic readings?

  • It could be due to magnetization of part of the drive chain. Try putting the sensor on the front hub for the next ride and see if that fixes the issue. If it does then some part of the drive chain has gotten magnetized or there is some other electronics interfering with the sensor..

  • and what if there is no speed sensor and speed is coming from GPS signal only, and the situation is the following on totally open sky with perfect satellite view, on pancake flat road:
It is the same problem what i already wrote /You and Garmin also/ down a few times, when the EDGE doesnt get new position for that given second and using the last known position from stack? and there is a duplicated position in two following records which causing the distance field is not changing, in next sec it already gets position again and there will be a jump in distance value and the calculated speed will be so erratic:

What is the solution for it (it happens with 530 also and with 1030 too, and 820, and Fenix3 also, so every Garmin units have this issue, so should be there a bug in a common part of the code or in a commonly used service (i mean, emphersis file or similat what is downloaded to the units automatically)

  • Please try to remove battery from SS2 for 5 min and than put it again. It helped mi with bad readings (also needed to re-add SS2 to GCM again)
