Cadence sensor and indoor trainers

When doing an indoor trainer training and having both Garmin and indoor trainers (Tacx Flux or Tacx Neo) cadence sensor connected, the Edge 830 only shows the indoor trainer cadence values, ignoring the cadence values sent by Garmin cadence sensor.

I’ve disconnected the cadence sensor from the indoor trainers but the Edge 830 keeps showing me the Tacx values (maybe because I have the indoor trainer power meter connected...).

How can I force the Edge 830 to always show me the cadence value from the Garmin cadence sensor?

(maybe because I have the indoor trainer power meter connected...).

your description is how it works

Tacx power/cadence is a combined sensor and is chosen as source above a single sensor

  • In my Edge 830, when the indoor trainer is on, it shows me 2 sensor to connect. One for the power and other for cadence and speed. I have just the power sensor connected.

Other important thing is that with my old Edge 820 it works fine with all sensors connected. Because the Edge 820 gives priority to the Garnin cadence sensor readings.

on the 820 I had the bike spd/cad sensors turned off when on the tacx neo

I used only spd/cad from tacx neo

I had them manual turned off in the sensors menu, because some times the 820 gave me a choice between the spd/cad sensors from tacx and the bike

    regarding the 830

do you get cadence when only tacx power is connected ?

do you have tacx ant+ and bluetooth sensors paired

  • Yes, strange but it happens. I’ve also manually disconnected the speed/cadence sensor from Tacx Neo, but it keeps showing me the cadence values (with also garmin cadence sensor disconnected)... I know the data comes from the Tacx Neo because the values are not as reliable and consistent as with the garmin cadence sensor.

This is really strange and it ruins my cadence trainings because the Tacx Neo cadence data is not as reliable as the garmin sensor.

And of course, the garmin sensor is connected and works perfectly fine on the road outside.

With all sensors connected, the 830 never asked me what cadence sensor to choose... that would be great!

yes it is a mess using the road bike on the indoor trainer without disabling sensors

Garmin left the idea adding sensors for each profile instead they went for a sensorpool.

And with our usecase we get this mess Slight smile

Can not say I had a cadence reliability problem with the Neo 1

  • Last test: Disconnect the power sensor from Tacx and all was ok. If I connect the power sensor from Tacx, cadence values go completely wrong. If I connect both power and cadence from Tacx, values are bad also.

This is stupid because with my old Edge 820 and the same sensors, all was ok and all connected...

when you suspect it being a bug, gather your data and contact Garmin Support

also ask them about the Tacx sensor, same company now Wink

  • Well, Garmin support doesn’t provide answers... But I finally solved by my own. So, when connecting to a trainer, it should be connected by the Training option in the Edge 830 homepage and not through the sensors add option, because it will lead you to a bug.

Then, after connecting the trainer, you won’t see it anywhere, but the trainer data sill appear on your data screens.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for this - used it for my 530 which ran into the same problem...
