For mountain biking, how to only show map prompts when nearing a fork?

I do mostly mountain biking, and I just have one data screen setup, which I want displayed most of the time. except when there's a fork on the trail. I think right now it displays the map when it sees a turn on the trail - for mountain biking trails have a lot of turns on them sometimes. Can the 830 be setup so it only shows map prompts on forks? If so, can it be set to show the prompt, say 50 feet (user selectable) from the fork?

  • I'm discovering that since mountain bike trails have a lot of "bends" that are NOT "turns," Edge devices like the 830 interpret these as "turns" (since essentially they are), instead of when you actually have to "turn" onto a different trail. This kinda sucks if I'm on an unfamiliar trail system, and the device keeps telling me to "turn" on bends, rather than on actual turns. Do Garmin folks use these for mountain biking?

  • I never tried, but there is an option to disable notive for bends/curves.
The other option is to disable routing notification at all. So it only gives notice when you leave a track.
That is what I did with the oder devices as well, as they have the same issue.
Usually will get notification after 20 - 50m when you leave track. So usually quick enough
