Charging the Edge 830

Hello, i just want to know if its fine to charge the 830 at anytime and will it affect the battery health in this manner or charge the device at a certain Battery % level (low battery)? Thanks.

  • IDK specifically about the 830, but but guidance for max useful life of Li Ion batteries has been to charge just before use and then use to ~50% before recharging.  I generally try to do this for my phones, Garmin Edge units, lights, but I'm not too anal about it.

Frequent shallow charging and deeper discharging will somewhat reduce the total useful hours.

  • I thought that Li Ion batteries don't have issues with "memory" and the recommendation was to prefer shallow charging?  Does Garmin have any recommendation about this?  I tend to connect mine to the PC and leave it there.  A habit I got into with the 800 since I needed to connect it to sync.

  • This is not about "memory" effect, this is just. It just means less overall load / wearing out the battery. And there is nothing Garmin can recommend further or better.
If you transfer your data by USB - I do the the same - you have 2 options. Keep it connected until fully loaded, or disconnect it directly and take care of the recommendations.
I don't care. I keep it connected until fully loaded. To me it is more important to be sure it is always on 100% and not running into the situation needing it for a longer ride and battery is unecpectadly low.
I did that for all my devices and didn't realize it make a big difference.

The announced lifetime is about 1000 - 1500 charging cycles (Full) for any LION battery. Assuming you do not use it every day you can do a fair lifetime forecast yourself. Ia m pretty sure you will get earlier keen on the next device generation. ;-)

  • Correct.  Li Ion batteries don't have a memory effect.  Memory effect is when a battery loses capacity due to not periodically being discharged deeply enough.  NiCd batteries are noted for this.  My suggestions for max life out of a Li Ion battery have no relation to any memory effect.

  • Sorry for the confusion.

  • Same here, I prefer to make sure it’s fully charged.  That said, the 830 battery lasts much longer than my 800 did.  So it’s less critical.  The 800 was not always able to last through a 6 hour ride.

I just upgraded to an 830, yesterday.  I can say that my 810 has lasted 4 years with no sign of battery degradation.  I always start a ride at 100% charge,  I have kept low display intensity during daytime rides and  i always charged after a ride.  I have logged about 40k kms over this time period which relates to approximately 500 rides or charges .  My Garmin 810 doesn't owe me anything and I'm very optimistic with the improved performance of the 830.

  • My 820 after a couple of years could only barely last 5 or 6 hours from 100% (on the map screen). I was constantly having to put it into battery saving mode. This was about half as good as it was from new. Much happier with the 830 for it's battery life and many other reasons Slight smile

  • This was my experience exactly. I stopped using navigation bc the 820 would quickly (3.5-4 hours) go to save battery mode (blank screen). Granted I also ran a power meter and HRM. Not sure how much they affect battery life. But thus far, 830 has been great. Same usage and still about 75% battery left after a 7-8 hour ride.
