Keep recording but stopping navigation

I’m learning the 830 more and believe I understand that navigation and recording an activity are separate things.  I’d like to stop (or potentially start) navigating while continuing to record an activity.  Should I simply hit the red x on the map screen (will this keep recording)?  I think this would be fine but wanted to see if there are other methods or if this functionality works the way I’m thinking.  Sometimes, little detours or additions make it easier to simply stop navigation on the fly.

I’m not sure if it’s possible to start navigating in the middle of a ride?  Say I stopped it to do an add on, can I restart it somehow with the activity running?

On a similar note, one problem I hit tonight that may be a misunderstanding on my part: near the end of a route a different turn was taken by the group than what was in the original route I was navigating. It eventually met back up with the route as intended, and naturally was getting a lot of off course warnings.  However, even when joining the original route a few miles later, the 830 kept telling me I was off course, almost like it was trying to get me back to the original spot where the different turn was taken.  Is this intended or a setting somewhere?  I would’ve thought it would do a better job at navigating, seeing that I’m back on course.  While not an out and back route, there are a couple of segments shared usong both directions that may have been confusing it...

  • Yes you can stop or start navigation whenever you like, independently of recording a ride.

Normally if you go off course and back on the 830 finds the course again so not sure what happened on your ride.

  • The little red x just stops navigation. You can stop and start navigation during a ride (the different units all allow it).

The units don't always recover from going off course.

Note that you can have the unit recalculate the route or not. Whatever you choose, it should resume the route when you return to the route. Keep in mind that the recalculation doesn't always do what you expect.

If you are following the route, you don't generally need to recalculate (making a u turn is the easiest way to return to the route).

(Of course, if you need or want to leave the route for a bit, the recalculation can be useful.)

You can fix that, sometimes, by reloading the course.

It works better if you reload it at a part of the course that doesn't overlap and while moving in the right direction (slowly works).

Keep in mind that the units don't know your heading unless you are moving.

  • This actually happened to me yesterday.  I was doing a ride following a route but ran into some construction.  I took a different route.  So I started getting prompts to get me back on course.  If you press the little red X, it prompts you to save your activity.  I didn't want this.  After some fidgeting, I found that if I went back to navigation, courses, saved courses and selected the one I was riding, I had the option to stop the course.  Then it asked if I wanted to ride that course and I exited.  I went back to my user screen and everything went ok.

Maybe that's what the OP is asking about.

As far as the question about starting to navigate into a ride, it seems to work as long as you don't select the "navigate to start" option that it presents.  This was a problem that I often had with my 800 that seems to work on the 830.

  • On the 800, "navigate to start" just calculates to the start point (ignoring the rest of the course).

Once you get to the start, you have to reload the course.

Don't use "navigate to start" if you are close to the start (or you are already on the course).

  • Thanks for this!  I'll have to create a simple route and test it out, but you are correct: ideally I want to quickly/easily stop navigation but keep recording.  The red x, I think, should allow this without stopping the activity.  So dumb question, how did you get back to the navigation screen while navigating?  I don't have the device in front of me now to tinker so maybe it's obvious.

Ideally, it would be great to stop navigation easily/quickly.  The off-course prompts were getting distracting, although I believe I can disable those.  But if I'm currently riding, I don't necessarily want to stop for 30 seconds to do so.

  • If you tap the screen, you should see a house like icon at the bottom. Clicking on that shows the home menu. Select another course (or whatever) from there.

  • Right, you go back to the Navigate option and if you select the same course you get a prompt to end it.  Once you end it, you can choose Ride again.  Or just back out.
