Does anyone have suggestions on the best way to protect the 830 in heavy rain, without messing up the altitude/elevation detection?

Last time I rode in the rain, my 830 elevation sensors got wet (I’m not even sure where they are located on the 830) and refused to show changes as I went up and down 1,000 foot ridges. Any suggestions on how to protect them from the rain and getting messed up by rain water?

I agree with this 100%. I have had Edge devices going back to the 510. Rain was never an issue. I went through 2 530s already. With the sensor at the bottom of the unit not only will rain get to it but…

The elevation detection is just a measure of air pressure change I believe. If so there won't be any 'external' sensor to protect. So why did this go wrong for you? Probably a bug when the rain coincided with a metrological change in air pressure which coupled with changes due to your altitude change confused the 830. Just a theory...

When it is raining water can block the hole leading to the pressure sensor. This prevents the pressure sensor readings changing when going up/down until the water dries out.

The 530/830 should be less prone to this as the location of the pressure port was moved the back of the unit to being under the mount for the USB dust flap.

Just finished a ride in the rain on beta 3.57. My gradients were all over the place and inaccurate -- actually showing negative while climbing.

Most likely I guess.

Note that a change in air pressure of 1 mbar (0.1 kPa), which is quite 'moderate' while passing a rain front equals a hydro-static water pressure of 10 mm (10 m W.C. = 10.000 mm WC = 1000 mbar = 100 kPa). This 10 mm water column cannot appear/block the barometer sensor that much as dimensions are much smaller.

Typically 1 mbar pressure drop/increase equals about 10 meter difference in altitude (rise resp. drop)

I think the pressure sensor ports are still on the back, right in front of the mount. The little hole under the USB dust flap is for looping the safety lanyard through on the MTB bundle.

To see the port you need to undo the small screw that retains the USB flap. The 2 holes on the back are for the speaker.

Despite port being relocated to this new position, which seems like it would have been a good idea. However, I have found that the port location here seems worse than any previous Edge device I've had from the 305 onwards.
