Uploading open street map (OSM) to garmin 830

I have read and followed previous instructions on how to load OSM maps onto my new 830. To display the new OSM map the original maps should be disabled. My concern is storage as I want to load several countries using OSM for touring and with up 30 or 40 days of routes saved will the 830 get overloaded? And should I remove the base maps rather than disable them? Previously my 810 allowed me to use a memory card and storage was not an issue. A guide on storage will be helpful please.

If your Edge 830 is an European Model then you have complete Europe as OSM on your Device. Same for other Regions.

I don’t understand why you and others load other OSM from same region the Device.

My 830 is an European Model and i choose to use the OSM maps since there are more complete (related to trails) than the original maps supplied by Garmin.

Can you show me an example of that because Garmin Maps are OSM based.

This i see with the Garmin 2019.10 Europe card on the Edge 830 and also in Basecamp with connected Edge 830.

Think you miss the red part. This part is 5 month old in openstreetmap. So it should be available in the next Garmin Map Update.

For you first question, i would now load a small OSM Maps from this region and activate on the Edge. I would not remove anything, only disable the Garmin OSM Europe. You can try http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl for individual OSM Maps . In Explorer (Windows) / Finder (macOS) you will see how many space you have on the Edge.

Removing or disabling the Garmin supplied maps achieves the same thing. I would only remove if space becomes an issue but it doesn't matter which way you go. The device will cope with several maps and routes. You should be fine for your tour. Put maps in the Garmin folder. Put routes in the Garmin/Newfiles folder. Check everything is there when the device boots up.

Just for curiosity, how could you see the 5 months old difference of the two maps ?

On Openstreetmap.org you can see when something is edit. That’s also the place where you can edit if something is wrong.

Maybe because TBT instructions with original Garmin map (Europe SW) don't work? Had to install alternative map to get usable roundabouts... smh

I agree with the fact that OSM maps are much more detailed than base maps provided on Garmin device
