Does garmin use navigation from TCX or onboard for RWGPS route?

WHen I load a route from RWGPS, it loads a TCX that I believe contains turn-by-turn directions.

WHen I navigate with that any idea if the 830 uses those navigation cues? Or does it ignore them and generate it's own based on it's own internal routing?

  • That is under your control.

If the TCX file contains course points for turn instructions the Edge can report those. The Edge can also generate turn instructions based on the course being overlaid on to a map.

Looking at the general settings under saved courses for turn guidance control and under the individual course settings for course point control

  • It does both (either independently or together. As Alan said above, it's under your control.

The devices can calculate "turn guidance" (Garmin's term) from the track data. The "cues" from this show up as big white arrows.

The devices can use the "course points" (Garmin's term) which are the navigation cues in the tcx or fit files from RWPGPS and other route planners.

These pop up as you arrive at them. They are mainly intended for Garmin units that don't use maps but can be useful on any unit.

One issue is that they show up at the turn, when you really want them before the turn. Some route planners (like RWGPS as a paid-subscription feature) will move them earlier in the track.

  • Thanks, I think that explains it. Typically when I approach a turn I get a new screen with a close up on the turn along with information about approach (distance and time). I assume this is "Turn Guidance"?

I also occasionally see a popup black bar at the bottom with a small indicator and some text. I assume that is a result of "Course Points"?

  • Correct on both accounts.
