Turn Guidance not working when on a course

Turn guidance does not work when on a course.  It works if navigating to the start of a course and it works if I go off course but when on course the top of the map screen that should show distance to next etc is blank and if I tap that area the cue sheet simply lists very short distances in meters but nothing else.  I have Turn Guidance enabled and selected Prompt to Recalculate.  Course Points enabled or disabled makes no difference.

On Course screen shots:

Off Course or navigate to start screen shots:

Once the first ClimbPro profile pops up it is repeatedly rapidly replaced with meaningless guidance prompts that probably reflect the rubbish cue sheet entries.

Changing from 3.50 to 3.55 beta did not help and I have reset the device several times from the settings menu.

The courses have been created on Strava or down loaded from ridewithgps, installed onto the 830 as GPX, TXC or FIT files via New Files but none work.  Loaded courses from Strava Routes do not work nor do imports from RWGPS using routeCourse app from the IQ store which converts to FIT files for installation. These files work perfectly on my old edge 800 and work perfectly on friends’ 1030 devices.

any ideas??

  • Strange.   I use courses downloaded from RideWithGPS as well as courses that I've created from recorded rides on the 830 and for the most part, TBT seems to work.  Actually better than it did with my 800.

From your screenshot, it looks like you are following the map?  I am always looking at a screen with my speed, cadence hr etc. and the TBT pops up about 200 meters from the turn.

  • Just a guess - do you have Europe Maps loaded?

  • I have OSM of the areas I ride just the same as my old 800 which works well and the same as people I ride with using 520, 820 and 1030 devices

  • OK problem solved I think -  disable 'Worldwide DEM Basemap,NR' if using Open Street Maps*.

    *Profile→ Navigation → Map → Map Information → Worldwide DEM Basemap,NR - "Disable"

When this problem occurred I was trying to use downloaded courses (from Strava or RWGPS) with an OSM map from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ as I always have used successfully when in Europe, previously with an Edge 800.

    On the Edge 830:

    1. guidance on downloaded courses does not work if using an OSM with the Basemap enabled (by default it is enabled) but guidance works as it should if the Basemap is disabled.

    2. guidance on downloaded courses works normally when using the pre-installed Garmin map of my region (Australia) whether or not the Basemap is enabled or disabled. Problems reappear if I disable the Garmin Australia maps and switch to an OSM map of my area unless I disable Basemap.

    3. guidance works normally with an OSM map and an active downloaded course even if the Basemap is enabled if the Garmin unit is determining the route eg navigating to start of course or navigating back to course if off course. Once back on course though, guidance fails if the Basemap has not been disabled.

BTW what is the point of the Basemap?  On the 800 it was useless but harmless.  On my 830 at least, it causes all sorts of course guidance problems if left enabled.
