Auto Start while stationary

New Edge 830 user with all the updates.  I've noticed that the unit decided to automatically start the ride by itself while sitting on my counter or plugged into the my PC while charging.  When I notice, I have to "stop" the activity and the discard it.  Anyone else having similar issues?

  • My auto pause is at 12 km/h and. Y auto start recording in 10 km/h.  Works pretty well on the road.  But on my desk charging it’s still constantly starting an activity.  And beeping. Like I said above it’s mostly when the pc goes to sleep.

  • i switched off auto and only use manual. once i start my tour i manually start the ride on the edge... after that the device nicely pauses whenever I stopp and continues whenever I continue my tour. no problems at all.

Auto start is unnecessary in my opinion

  • Perfect for you if your use case is handled.  But that doesn’t mean it’s working for everyone.  If I set my device to start recording when the speed is over 10km/h I don’t expect it to start recording sitting on my desk.

    Garmin should fix their bug.

  • am not here to defend as I had the same issue on my unit (set to 6km/h) but any having this issue would consider radio noise that do affect electronic units. 2 good examples are once on my bike i had a front light that once flashing it would break any wireless signal (old standard bike computers) in such a way that speed sensor would stop...or i do some hand made drones and the mag/compass goes crazy with a lot of interference from other components.
That said, i would refrain to call this a bug but maybe proximity of some other equipment with radio that tend to produce a lot's of radio noise and do affect units, like GPS, mag/compass,....

i had this "issue" happening always indoors where electric/electronic equipment are present, but never on the outdoors and i also bet that some of the claims about sensors dropping happen due to electronic noise.

    Just my opinion

  • It's not a bug.  GPS reception indoors is poor to non-existent.  If you have poor reception it can lead to the calculated position changing and this makes the unit think it is moving.  This then triggers settings based on speed thresholds.

GPS isn't meant to be used indoors.  The solution is to turn the unit off or put it to sleep when indoors.

  • This is happening when it’s plugged into a pc being charged.

  • That is irrelevant for what is happening.

  • Why should the device think it’s moving when it is connected to a pc and being charged?
Your suggestion about turning it off makes no sense.  It turns on when connected via USB to my pc.

  • Normally when you plug your Edge into a computer via USB it detects this and the only thing you see on the screen is the connected to computer picture.  In this state it will not beep or do anything.  You can see the unit in your computer's file browser and can sync with Express or interact with the files on the unit.

If you don't see this then you are using a power only USB cable (or something else odd is going on) and the unit does not know it is plugged into a computer.  It will be looking for the GPS satellites (unless it is in the Indoor profile) so it thinks it is moving due to poor GPS reception indoors as I stated earlier.

So, when indoors turn it off (it will still charge) and it won't beep because it thinks it is moving.

  • I am not using a power only USB.
