Edge 830 continuously loosing connection with Di2

I am running the new Edge 830, with Software that is up-to-date. — Version3.50.0.0. Once connected and during an activity the Edge 830 constantly looses connectivity with the Di2, within a minute 10 - 15 times. It disconnects and connects continuously during a ride, loosing data fields in the display like gear combo, battery % and continuously comes back with screen messages what Di2 modus I am running in when re-connecting. Very distracting and annoying.

All firmware from Di2 / Etube is up to date as well as the Garmin Edge 830 software.

I am coming from and Edge 820 where I did not / hardly not experience this issue.

Any recommendations how to resolve this issue.

  • Where is your Di2 D-fly transmitter located?   There are two kinds, an axial type and an radial type, the former usually near the front of the bike in the cable from the control module to the junction box in the BB, the other usually mounted near the RD on the seat stay.  I've seen some situations where the D-fly unit was located in the frame causing poor connection.  It's not common to do this, but check to see where yours is.

  • The Di2 D-Fly is near the front of the bike in the cable from the control module. However I continue to not understand why the new Edge 830 continues to loose connection, not a few times but continuously during the ride, where my "old" Edge 820 does not have that connection issue.

  • Mine is in my frame and I don't seem to have connection drops with my 830. Is it possible you've connected over BT rather than ANT+? Have a look in the sensor details and it should show you that info.

  • The Di2 system only transmits ride data over ANT for use with head units. The head units will only pair with it over ANT.

The BLE mode is for making updates and configuration changes to the Di2 system via the phone app.

  • One week old E830 - Version 3.50 (latest) and default screens

Di2 EW-WU111 - Version 4.5.2 (latest), located in the neck of frame 8" radius of Garmin mount..

Same event for me on my maiden voyage with the Di2 installed.  All systems were working together until mile 32 when I came to a stop light and manually paused the activity.  The light turned green and I assumed auto resume would start the 830 again, it didn't.  Nothing happen even when I manually pressed start after clipping in. The screen remained frozen in time on the last moment of known activity.

I continued pedaling trying to get 830 to respond and even resorted to pressing the power button fearing I'd lose all my data.  Still no response.  So I continued to press and hold the power button waiting for a reboot.  As I fell further behind the group, the 830 did not want to respond.  For the next half mile I held the button and it finally rebooted.

When it came back on, it defaulted to one of the factory screens and was tracking again, but the Di2 controls no longer responded.  Thinking it was the a buggy Di2 D-Fly software I continued for another 20 miles.  At the next stop light, the E830 told my emergency contacts that I had falling and sent them my coordinates.  I tapped the screen to dismiss, but subsequently received a stream of "are you ok" texts that I had to pull over to let them everything was ok.

When I completed the ride I noticed the 830 was still acting strange and did not want to shutdown.  When I finally got it to power cycle and loaded it up to Garmin Connect, I realized that not only had I lost Di2, but the ANT/BLE network had been down since the freeze.  From the point of the freeze, I lost the speed sensor, cadence, heart rate and Di2.

As a FIX attempt, I have updated the D-Fly unit to use the ANT protocol only vs. ANT/BLE.

  • Good to know, thanks.

I have the same issue, my Di2/eTube is mounted in the the seat tube. I disconnected and reconnected after the most recent Garmin Edge update but still experiencing the same issue. Constant drop outs and reconnections which then alerts me that I am in "Shift Mode 1", super annoying. I never had an issue with the Wahoo Elemnt Bolt located on the same K-Edge mount.

  • I have the EW-WU111 in my seat tube and have no issues

I have the EW-WU101 in the seat tube of my second bike and have the same issue you report.

Both bikes and seat posts are carbon.

  • I also experience this issue with 830 (latest firmware) and EW-WU111 unit. The same D-Fly worked seemingly without issue on 1030 for more than a year. At least I don't recall seeing the "Shift Mode" alerts during the ride. Now maybe occurs once an hour or so. D-Fly is located in the same place it always has been and is updated with latest firmware.
