Navigation prompts are late

Hi!

When navigating the prompts are late, ie they pop up when Im already exiting a junction or a road fork, which is a bit useless.
Using only GPS (no glonass / gallileo)

Known bug, or me at fault?

Using FW 3.50.

Regards,
Chris

  • Are the navigation prompts from saved course points in the course file or from the turn-by-turn instructions generated by the Edge?

  • Sorry for fussy description.

I mostly use pre-made GPX "Tracks" and follow that as a overlay on the map, created at ridewithgps.com.
Imported via the IQ-app, and via file transfer.

So, it's not the Edge that does turn-by-turn.

  • If you're using the Edge to navigate a gpx course, it's the 830 that is doing the tbt.  It compares the track points to its map, and then uses its map data to compute the course and generate the tbt, including turn arrows on its map display.

TCX are processed the same way by the 830, but they can also contain text associated with a track point that can be displayed by the Edge.  That text can be anything, but is usually turn instructions created by the site used to lay out the course.  It puts those instruction before the turn, but if you ride the course backward from the direction it was laid out,  they'll pop up after the turn.

  • If you are using course points for turn instructions then they are nothing to do with the Edge unit.  If they are too late for you they need to be moved in the course creator to a more suitable position.  Turn instructions generated by the Edge unit should pop up about 0.1 miles before the turn.

  • Hmm. I cant' really put any of your answers to practise...

This might be ridewithgps-specific... what I do is export the GPX Tracks without cue sheet.

I create a tracks with locking "control points" in forks / turns (in ridewitgps) , just before, and after the fork / turn, but have no idea what is going on in between. So, would your suggestion be to put control points further away from the fork?

  • That's exactly what I do and have done forever with different Garmin devices. GPX tracks from RideWithGPS. I select"  Navigation, Courses, Saved Courses, select course, Ride.  It works as I described in my earlier post.  Turn instructions are generated by the Edge based on its map.

  • If you are using the IQ app with ridewithgps then those prompts are coming from the .FIT file that ridewithgps is sending.  You cannot control when those cue sheet prompts happen.  You should turn on navigation on the 830 and ignore those pop-ups.  To not have those come up you can either download the GPX from ridewithgps and copy it to the 830 or check out RouteCourse from Dynamic Watch.  You can turn off the cue sheet prompts with it.
