Climbpro when navigating ad-hoc but not a course?

I don't quite know the correct terms for this...

Climbpro works as expected when I'm navigating a course.

I've also heard (via DCRainmaker) that whilst out riding (but not navigating) you can scroll/pan the map, select a point to navigate to and select Ride, and Climbpro will evaluate the route and show climbs you're about to encounter.

I've never see this happen. Is Ray incorrect or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks

  • I spoke with Garmin on this and currently ClimbPro on the Edge is only activate when following a saved course.

In theory it should be possible to use ClimbPro when navigating to a POI or address, but the quality of the experience will be dependent on the quality of the elevation data in the DEM map on the unit.

They said they are considering it for a future release, but did not give a firm commitment or date.

I REALLY hope they do this, even if it's not quite as accurate.  When I hit up a mountain bike course, I NEVER use a pre-made course.  Sometimes you run into friends on the trail, re-routes, etc and decide to go another way.  I would be willing to click around the map and say 'navigate here' in order to use climb pro.  But I don't know of anybody who would ever consider heading out for a day on the trails with a pre-made course and dedicate to sticking to it.  I don't even like doing that for road rides.  Because of this I've never even seen the climb pro feature in-use on my device.  I was really looking forward to it; one of the reasons I got the device.

-Does Garmin have any type of 'Idea-Exchange' site where things like this can be up-voted?

  • The only mechanism I know of is the location to submit an idea, but it has no discussion or voting mechanism
