Feeling abit put off, will garmin fix?

Hello, I have never had a cycling computer so dont have any experience with garmin or others.

I am wanting the 830 and I have it in my basket ready to click order (or not) but after reading these forums and some other groups I am feeling abit put off with some of the problems people are reporting .

The alternative is the elemnt roam which from what I have read it's a no thrills and just works device... but I want the thrills Joy I just dont want to buy a problem.

question is , is garmin likely to fix many of these problems or will I be expected to just deal with it for the most part? I get that only garmin really has the answer to this but from past experiences how have they dealt with it ?

  • It's a great cycling computer. Very few satisfied users ever post on a forum to announce how happy they are. What you're reading on forums are the disgruntled people (and only those who can be bothered to post rather than just wait for the next fix)

I upgraded to the 830 from the 810. Previously I had the Edge 705. I also have  Vivoactive 3. I've been totally underwhelmed by reviews of the Roam, and it doesn't support Varia radar which is amazing once you've experienced it!

I didn't/don't need the extra features of the 830 but I'm a very happy customer. The latest beta f/w is great and I've only seen a couple of the issues reported on these forums anyway.

  • Just buy from a place with a good return policy.... my tip.

  • You just have to understand what you're getting into when buying a relatively new Garmin device and accept that it will be quite a while before 90% of the bugs are worked out and the other 10% you'll learn to live with. Whether or not that works for you will depend on if your priorities lie in that 10% but in most cases it's still far better than an alternative. Welcome to the public beta called the Edge 830!

Thanks everyone, think I just needed abit of reassurance that they will iron out most of the bugs. I will be ordering from sigmasports as they offer £50 pre-paid card back, free silicon case and £10 off first order so it's a good deal and brings it on par with the roam in cost, not sure on their returns as I have never dealt with them so I'll have a look

  • Sigma are excellent. My favourite bike shop.

  • Here's my experience, being new to Garmin cycling computers after having used Polar for years.  I recently replaced my Polar V650 with the Edge 830, mainly because I mostly ride alone and wanted the peace of mind of the LiveTrack functionality (which is hit-or-miss), as well as the navigation features of the 830.  (The V650 has mapping capability, and you can load courses onto it to follow, but it doesn't give turn-by-turn directions.)

Prepare for a long learning curve, confusion and frustration when the 830 doesn't do what you logically expect it to.  While I understand that the forums are mostly filled with problems and complaints, I honestly can't believe that ANYONE can get this thing set up and working as desired 100% out-of-the-box, unless you have extensive experience with Garmin devices and are familiar all of their quirks.  The owner's manual, both the print and online, is so basic that it is of little help if you are looking for clarification on any of the nuances or features.  (That's where the forums can help.)

For example, over the weekend I stitched together a nice long mountain bike route on Trailforks for a trail system that is mostly a web of trails.  My intent was to make a loop to avoid doubling back or reriding trails more than once or twice.  I loaded it onto my Garmin through the Trailforks Connect IQ app and took off.  It was a mess.  I couldn't understand what the device was telling me to do or where to go.  Whenever I would stop (which was often) it would zoom to some inexplicable level, different every time.  When I would restart, it would zoom to yet a different level and reorient the map.  It showed multiple different lines, which never matched -- one was my path, one was the route, one was the trail (I assume).  None of these matched and I wasn't sure where I'd been or where I was supposed to go.  This was ruining the flow of my ride, so eventually I gave up and stopped the navigation.  I also disabled the Trailforks map since it didn't show some of the trails or surrounding roads.

My point is that this device takes some getting used to (as does any new tech, to be honest) and it's still fairly buggy.  Garmin is releasing fixes, but I can't believe that they would release something as "production ready" with so many issues.  Do they do this knowingly?  I think it will eventually get there, but if you can wait, save yourself the frustration and wait until it gets better.

  • The Edge 830 is a great cycling computer. I've had mine for less than a week, but I used on multiple rides. Everything worked flawlessly, including navigation.
