830: GPS or navigation issue

Day 2 with an 830.  Still learning the device, and had a big ride today (68 miles). Route was made by Ride With GPS, and imported into the 830 via the IQ app.  Route started and was great for the first 60 miles.  All the cues, climbs, etc worked great!  But then, it just seemed to think I was off course, shadowing the real course (curves and all) except being several hundred feet away. (Reasonably rural area. Device seemed to be running really slow.)  GPS signal was strong.  Map seemed stuck on recalculating.  I noticed the GPS was set to GPS + Galileo, so I changed this to GPS.  I couldn’t really play with the device as I was riding with a group, but because I was also recording with my Fitbit watch, I compared maps afterwards.  The Garmin definitely was lost with lots of very straight segments somewhat close to the right direction but nowhere near where I really was ... but did sync back with a mile left.  I can’t say if this is because I switched it to GPS only as I was ignoring it by then.  As I said, it was damn near flawless the first 60.

So, no idea what the cause was...GPS/Galileo? Software routing bug?  In reviewing related posts, this hardly looks like a new issue.  What’s the best way to recover?  Hard reboot?  Can an activity resume easily after reboot? Or maybe just stop/restart course navigation?  Just curious.

Running the latest non-beta software.

  • Galileo is broken right now. Leave it on GPS or GPS+Glonass. Try another ride before doing anything radical...

I had a similar problem on a ride yesterday, flawless for the first 85k and then the orientation seemed to change and failed the get any turn alerts. Reviewing the route today it looks like my position on the map

shifted a couple hundred feet (into rural field) at the end of the ride. I will change setting to GPS only.

I have had similar issues where it starts off working great, and on longer rides it starts to have lots of issues. The map screen shows me in a different place than I actually am. This was in a dense forest, but so was the beginning of the ride and I had no issues then. Not sure if it is a memory issue with longer courses. On shorter courses I have not had this issue.

  • Thanks guys for chiming in.  It might be that it was Galileo in my case, but the fact that the three of us had similar issues late in a long ride might point to other causes.  I decided to download the beta, so will try that although I don’t know when I’ll be doing another ride that long, probably a few weeks at least.

  • I had the same problem at the beginning of the ride on friday. The next ride after 40K. I stop the ride, switched to GPS+Glonass I started a new ride the problem didn't occur again.. My brothers 1030 was working fine. I think this is not just a Galileo problem.

  • Just for information: Galileo service is restored since yesterday afternoon 5 p.m. UTC: www.gsc-europa.eu/notice-advisory-to-galileo-users-nagu-2019028

  • Morning ride 92 km, first 40 splendid ! After the eternal same issue just like the 820, 92 Km to end and no guidance with a street here in the neighborhood in the top area.

I think there is nothing else to do than wait for the right update, I was thinking a while it was resolve with Beta 3.55, but nope !

Garmin hurry a bit, I am going on holiday mid august !
