touchscreen dead/unresponsive

Yesterday after plugging my 830 out from my laptop, the device was not reacting to any touch inputs:

The buttons were working fine (power button, start/stop), the device was still looking for and connecting to sensors; phone/wifi sync was not impacted. But I wasn't able to control the device via touchscreen.
Reseting/restarting the device (10s power button) did not help.

I faced this behaviour one time before, after installing GPS chipset beta 2.42. Touchscreen wasn't taking any inputs, but otherwise the edge was working fine. I was ready to ship my unit back, but at this time firmware 3.41b was available and I figured it couldn't hurt to try flashing this beta version. After flashing & rebooting the device was working again.

But yesterday out of the blue (no firmware flashing, just charging & normal sync of biometric data via garmin express) after unplugging the edge from my laptop, touch input went dead again.
I could fix this with downgrading to the old GPS firmware & updating again to 2.42b.

current versions:

firmware 3.50
GPS 2.42
WLAN: 2.10
CIQ: 3.0.8

Garmin Express: 6.15.0.0

Mac OS 10.14.2

  • Well, yesterday- fortunately after my workout- I changed a setting on a cIQ data field, and the touch input went dead again. I'm now trying to fix this with reflashing firmware- preferably GPS....

  • I posted about the same issue 2 weeks ago. Eventually the screen responded the next morning. It has happened several times since then and I suspect that the temperature of the device may be the issue. I did several rides during the heatwave when the device showed temperatures up to 42ºC and while the screen responded well during the ride, it did not respond after charging afterwards and temperatures shown were well above 32ºC. The latest firmware 3.50  and GPS chipset beta 2.42 did not change this behavior.

  • I cannot confirm (or deny) any dependence on temperature.
Reflashing GPS firmware did not do the trick this time. But putting a "downgrade file" on the device reactivated touch input.

I'd really appreciate some response from garmin here. I'm happy to provide any additional info. I don't want to get in touch with the official support channel, as 'ship it to us' would be the most likely the answer.

To be honest: 830 vs. elmnt roam was a very close call, and I only chose 830 because I'm using a fenix5 and wanted to stay in the same eco system. After having a lot of trouble with my 1k power meter Vector3 and now this, I'm really questioning my choice. Luckily wahoo does not have a multi-sport solution- yet.

  • Dear garmin team,

any ideas what I can do? Next race is up in less than 3 weeks & I'm feeling a little left alone.

  • Best thing you can do is call and get someone on the line to help you.

  • I have a 1030 Edge with same issue. For several days now the three buttons work but no response to touchscreen. Looks like similar problem. This a refurbished unit. Garmin, can anyone respond to this. Not being able to select rides or courses makes this very expensive unit no better than a simple bike computer. We deserve better.

  • Hello, did Garmin ever get back to you on this. Our 830 is doing the same thing today. :(

  • I initiated a chat direct with Garmin. Went through a bunch of stuff. They offered me a refurbished unit. I had done that a few times so I bought latest new unit and they gave me 20% off with trade of my old unit.

  • Cool. Yeah, we got ahold of them and they're replacing our unit with a refurbished one.

  • My wife's 830 touch screen stopped working too all of the sudden. Granted, her handlebar brazed a tree a bit... but an MTB device should be able to handle a bit of abuse.

Anyway, I was quoted €136 by Garmin to get a refurbished unit, with a 90 day warranty.

But stubborn as I am, I ordered a new screen through Asian channels... but couldn't hold myself back and opened the unit prior to the screen arriving.

At first all seemed fine, but when I wanted to remove the screen completely, by undoing the connectors, I noticed a connector had come loose.

Pushed it back in, and Presto... screen working again.

This is not to say that all units have this issue, but it's still an option i reckon.
