Junction view zoomed in too far during navigation

I have been testing out the navigation of my new Edge 830.  When you approach a junction the map screen pops up and shows you which way to turn.  For quite a few junctions, mainly roundabouts, this map view is zoomed in too far.  This makes it harder to use.

A view of the entire junction is more useful so you can easily see the orientation of the roads leading from it.  It is also confusing when you approach a roundabout and the map view that appears is zoomed in so fat that it appears to be a t-junction.  It is not so much of an issue when I know the roads but if I was new to the area it would be more problematic.

It was even more confusing when I tried the Garmin supplied map which didn't have some roundabout junctions actually called up as roundabouts.

For some junctions the view is zoomed appropriately.  i didn't have this behaviour with my Edge 800.  The map view on that was zoomed to an appropriate level to see the entire junction and any required turns immediately afterwards.

Here are some examples of the issue.

Here are some examples of when the unit shown a more appropriate view

Are there any improvements in the pipeline to modify the auto zoom?

  • Same problem here, especially in town, has got worse since latest update. Is it solved by turning off auto-zoom, and which is the best zoom option to choose?

  • I've got this issue since I've bought my 830 more than 2 years ago.I Aldo reported It to the Garmin support, response was to reset the device obviously it doesn't resolve anything. Those popups are completely unusefull with that zoom issue. I've disabled them through an option, but It works only of you are in navigation page. If you are in another page they still popup and they would be very usefull without that issue.

I also reported this issue to Garmin support. There was no reaction. Because of this and other annoying issues I changed to Hammerhead Karoo 2 after 13 Edge years.

No. Switching off auto-zoom doesn't solve this problem.

  • I believe this is a map problem. For some reason I don't understand, most of the roundabouts on Garmin's OSM based maps are not designated as junctions.

I used UK maps from Talkytoaster and French maps from another OSM provider ( sorry, can't remember which ) and these do not suffer from this problem.

It's not only a map problem. My old Edge 1000 does not show this behaviour. The map version on my Edge 1000 is the same as on my 830.

    • It isn't a map problem. I never had it on my Edge 800 but did on my 830 using the same map. It also isn't consistent. Sometimes you get it at a certain junction and sometimes you won't at the same junction.
  • I have the same problem. The same for very short left/right turns

    Garmin could fix this.

Just let the map page show up when aproaching the turn instead of the navigation prompt.

A solution could be to define a reasonable max zoom level for turn cues e.g. 30m or so. This solution should be easy to implement in the next software update.
